tail / brake light problem

  1. i noticed my break light wasent workin so i tract down the proble and the connection was dirty everything is clean now. but when i hit the break light the tail comes on and when i turn the lights on it turns the brek light on . no i pulled the bulb holder out and fliped it and that dident work i dident pull any wires off or im kinda stumped . anyone have any ideas its a 1962 chevy truck

    Inside the socket things are touching eachother. Maybe clean w/scotchbrite and spray or compressed air inside lamp socket?

    Might be another short in there too.... Should be two wire going in, parking light, and brake light (brake light is also your signal). Ground should be through the housing. sometimes if it's not grounded well, it'll find a ground through whatever is there.
     
  4. had the same problem on my Desoto. Two wires shorting under the rug...rotten cotton insulation...

    A bad ground can cause a lot of weird, otherwise unexplainable shit to happen!
     
  6. I tracked a host of bizzare electrical gremlins on Henrietta the '38 Ford pickup to a loose bolt connecting the battery ground cable to the engine block. Tightened it down and they all went away. I was ready to send for an exorcist before I found the problem.

    I would run temporary grounds from each light to the frame/body. Then check. When lights do weird things, its usually a ground.

    If the temp grounds solve the problem, make up something more permanent.
