Has any body doen it? SBC in 1957 Fairlane?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Chevydeuce, Nov 23, 2009.

  1. Although he said he will not be reading this thread any further.. I just thought I would add... Build what your customer wants.. Build it safe and reliable. I have been thrashed on here many times over putting a S.B.C. in several cars.. The only ones bitching are the traditional crowd.
The guys driving their chevy powered whatevers have a shit eating grin on their faces while driving the piss out of their cars with the non-trad air conditioner on.... Have a nice day..

I know what you mean about putting a Ford in a Ford. After dropping in a 429 and top loader I drove my '56 F100 (see avatar) across country, VA to San Diego. I entered it in a show at Jack Murphy stadium, one of 3 F-100s, and the only one to have a Ford motor. A few people asked me why I didn't put an SBC in. One guy even thought it was a 427 Chevy, and asked me how I got the distributor in front! I told him I used a Mopar conversion kit and I think the dumbass believed me! lol
Generally, I like to keep motors and cars in the same family. If I can ever get the '54 Chevy Belair my Dad has, it'll get a 409, M-22 Rock Crusher, 9 inch and straight axle.

My choice would be a roller 351W with/AOD. They are available, and can deliver 400HP (with proper heads, cam, and exhaust). Get one from a 90's Lightening truck and it will bolt right in w/a 1" spacer. The 351W is very similar to a 5.0, except it has 1/2" longer stroke and bigger bearings. I'm putting an EFI in my '55 Customline. - Dave

y-blocks,windsors,and FE's all bolt in no problems . i wouls go with that it is the easiest and the most cost-effective . now if you have your heart set on the chevy . i think you better use a nova sub-frame . i am cringing just thinking about it but it would do the trick . the parts are cheap . how good with a welder are you ?

put some newer ford parts on it...like a front steering mustang rack and pinion. or is that considered blasphemy here...my bad i'm talking about new tech again, sorry. maybe just sell the chevy crap cheap and drop in a real motor designed by ford. is it a post 83' 700r?

how about a 331 hemi in a 54 chevy wagon, is that considered wrong to the ford guys or the chevy guys? personally i do like the little blue symboled cars, mostly knew ones, the owners don't like me though. off subject but...infact i have a deep appreciation for brand new plastic cars especially the 4 cylinder turbo's they always catch a good view of my tail lights. but i believe car building is personal and meditative, build what you want to drive and drive the wheels bald then replace and repeat rinse and wash. hahahaha.

  7. May heard of 100 syphilis ridden camels take a runny dump in your front seat if you install that cancerous sbc in that georgeous Ford. But,,,JMO

  10. As I read the post that seems to have brought a reply that's revived this thread from the dead, I have to ask.. you found Ford guys who will actually pay real money for them? I can't give those things away. Would think an SBC wouldn't hurt value one bit - you can't subtract from zero. Short a 2-seat T-bird, a retractable, or a couple of other rarer models, of course. Or wait, you said asking price, I'd have to bet the Chev in Ford actually sells for more than the Ford in Ford, short some rare Nascar motor or something.

I guess all I can offer the real die-hard Ford in Ford guys who complain when they see an SBC in one, is where were you when the last guy sold it?

You wont get me to buy a Ford with a chevy motor unless it has a very big price reduction, why would I pay good money to repair what a moron fucked up.

  12. sure wish i had the picture of a slant 6 in a 58' ford custom! that sure turned some heads when that mopar starter engaged! with the 4v and headers it really had a strange sound.

  13. Your car...do what you want. Not sure if those ford valve cover adaptors for chebys are still around.

Shame on you for even thinking about putting s SBC in a '57 Ford, or ANY Ford for that matter! Way too many really good Ford motors out there to bastardize a Ford engine compartment!

My thoughts exactly. There's a car around here that's been in the garage for the past 20 or so years. It's a '60 Corvette that's got a chromed straight axle up front, painted metalflake blue and looks killer, at least until you look under the hood and see the Ford 390. Hey, I like early 'vettes, I love'em with a gasser stance, and I like pretty much any Ford, but to do that is just wrong.

  16. i did this, early pan, oil pump(which is shorter than the normal rear sump) and dont forget the pump drive shaft which is shorter also. I also made my own pump pickup too. I once read on this site to "run whatcha got and make what you dont", sure are alot of hypocrites out there.

Oh stop! I get so tired of all this "can't do this, shouldn't do that" stuff. Do it! Enjoy it! It'll be WONDERFUL!

It's a '57 Ford, not a Tucker. For Chrissakes, cut it up, do something cool, do whatever you want to it.

Too many people sippin the Hater-ade on here.

A Chev powered 57 Ford would be unusual. A good idea? I don't know....don't think so. But, you do whatever you (or he) wants to do. Actually, I have been giving thought to putting one of my flatheads in a 65 Mustang. That would be different.....but a bit deranged.

If resale is in its future,a Ford engine of your choice would be wise.

  23. Something tells me if you're adding to this thread on March 24th you're too late, the car is already running down the road under reliable Chevy power. But then you probably also missed that the OP is in a place where Ford V8s don't grow on trees either, so...

What you should do is junk the 57 Ford and buy yourself a real car from 1957. It's called a BelAir. Then you will have something deserving of the SBC you have.

Back in '62 we put a Vette engine in a '56 Ford. Sure did win a lot of races and a lot of money...
