Cable driven Generator or Alternator

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by jrblack30, Feb 5, 2010.

  1. Well, Looks like I managed to build myself into a corner. Looking for idea on mounting a generator/alternator. Have no room between the hood side for conventional mounts. Anyone have some pics for remote mounting a generator or alternator for cable driven systems?

Already thought of a drive shaft unit but I am closed driveline, so that is out.

I am trying to mount mine below the motor.... not sure if that'd work for you?

I never considered running the engine extra's off teleflex cables like a tach? It would be nice pumps and distributors could just be stuffed anywhere. No belt driven anything. Just line it all up on the fenders for easy servicing. Anybody ever try anything like that?

tell us more about your engine and frame, maybe share some pics? Right now I am imagining a top mount over a V8, but that's no good if you have a****mins inline 6.

Give us more to go on!

Yes. There are other threads here. Not crazy for generator or fuel pump, maybe, but bounce in the cable would play havoc on an ignition drive.

  6. The motor is '51 Cadillac 331 stuffed in a 34 with full hood. The Generator normally mounts to Pass side exhaust manifold. running a drivers side mani there to fit inside the hood. The crank pully is overhung over the fron cross member, no direct access. The motor mounts cast in the block, obstruct mounting the generator down low. The waterpump and fuelpump block a high mount. The only things remaining is tucked up tight to the valve covers but no diect path to the belt, thermostat housing is in the way.

I posted this last night on a different thread and noone responded.
Ok this might be a dumb question but i have a electric start dirtbike and the starter stays engauged and charges the battery while the bike is running. I heard that old airplane engines also use the starter as a generator.
Is this true and would it work on a car?

A small alternator should fit just ahead of the pass. side head. Also, you do know that an alternator can turn either way, you can mount one "backwards" ahead of the pulleys? Probably have to go to an electric fan, though, for room.

Or, put a double pulley on the water pump, farther out front, and a short belt to the alt.? You could gain an inch or more like that.

turning an alternator around backwards is a possibility. You will need to look at some of the very small import alternators. They get tiny.

Running one off the ring gear is a nice thought, but the gear wasn't designed for two way loads, nor was it designed to handle the constant stress it would be under. An aircraft ring gear is much wider.

also look for pulleys with additional grooves that would allow running an alternator off the crank without going over the water pump.

You can buy a NASCAR mini alternator off ebag and it will mount in several places looking at your pictures. I get a lot of my rod stuff from Jchambers on ebag who is a big seller and his stuff is top quality and priced right.

  13. Just cut a sheeve off the crank pulley to get this motor to fit in there. The motor is very tight in there, I have 3/8" between the pulley and cross member and 1/2" Valve cover to the firewall.

I think I am gonna start looking for another water pump pulley with 2 sheeves. Still have to find a way to mount the generator or alternator.

Yes,a small alternator, besides the Nascar stuff, check out what's on small "Kabota" tractors. For a Generator, you may be able to adapt a Harley unit from the older V Twins, about 15 amps, may be ok.Perhaps mount the alternator or generator where it fits, then fabricate a jack shaft driven by belt off the crank or water pump pulley and then a another belt or direct shaft drive to the generator.
