I'm selling my '41 Ford truck project, and a guy supposedly in my state has agreed to a price. He wants to send me a cashiers check to cover the cost we agreed to, plus an additional amount to cover the shipping cost from a company he knows, that will pick it up. He asks me to deduct my amount, and give the rest to the trucking company...Sounds like a Scam to me...anybody hear of this kind of situation??

Classic scam. Must still work, because people are still doing it.

Probably is, so tell him to have the trucking company bring cash...
    That'll flush him out...

If I was in your state and wanted to buy your truck, I would drive to look at it first, and put the cash in your hand just prior to leaving with the truck. Anything as you described is suspect. Tell him he can pick it up after the check clears your bank. It never will, it's fake.

    Scam!
Make him pay you in person with cash or provide you with two USPS money orders. If he sends the usps money orders take them to the post office right away to verify. If they are bogus, tell him the deal is on and have the postal dudes send the Inspectors with guns.
They will snag the trucking company and the trucking company will roll over on the principal. You get two for one that way!!!! Save someone else the headache.

Scam, If a for real guy doesn't want to carry the cash greenies tell him you will go to the local bank of his choice for him to draw funds and pay you inside the bank lobby. No green, no truck.

    NO!

    the check will clear.

as much as 2 months can go by and then the bank will take back the money, or make you pay them back if you withdraw the money.

this has happened to many people...yes, 2 months later

Great idea, He's kind of vague, and hasn't mentioned the trucking Co. name or the city he lives in. I'd like to trap this guy somehow...

Ya know, this pisses me off. I'm buying a truck right now from a guy out of state and I have to jump through hoops to make sure they know that my cashiers check is legit. As frustrating as it is, I totally understand why they're so cautious. These scammers are making things really difficult. I hope there's a special spot in hell for these scammers, because I can't think of anyone I'd rather punch in the face repeatedly.

Oh ya, and yes your situation sounds like a scam.

Thanks to all. I just needed to hear from like minded Rodders. I asked him again what city he lived in, and haven't heard back from him yet. Sad to think this guy is doing this to others.......Money Talks...

Don't do it bro - no matter what he promises. Classic scam. If he knows this trucking company so well, they would be ok taing his check and not even get you in the middle of it.

Easiest method, bank transfer. Because a bank has to send it directly to another bank it is guaranteed to be safe.

Only thing I recommend because I'm paranoid is set up a temporary account they can transfer into so your not giving up your checking acct. info...not that they can do anything with it but like I said, I'm paranoid.

I cannot believe there is a human being on this planet that doesn't know this is a scam. The one I got 5 years ago was stright as an arrow-at least until I learned that cashier's checks can be both forged-and stopped. Don't do it. Wait for cash-and then use one of those pens Walmart uses to check for fake bills.

Every time I get one of these scam emails, I just email them back and tell them to add $5000 to the deal for me. Pisses them off everytime. Except once, I ended up emailing him several times letting him know each time that the price was raising $1000 each day, the idiot was cool with that. Steven.

The check will likely show up with the wrong amount. Too high. Then he'll contact you and ask you to send the difference back to him. The check is a fake and you're out the difference.

    Tell him to suck eggs

You need to use thier check as a 3rd party check and buy something from somebody else in Nigeria.

Work out the way you get paid, never by cashier's check, either cash at the exchange or bank to bank transfer. Never, not any possible need to get involved in the shipping. Buyer can arrange all of that, with understanding that his carrier, picked and dispatched by him, can have the vehicle after you are satisfied the payment you received is good. If he don't trust you with that, then he has to come and pick it up in person.

I'm sorry, but I can't for the life of me understand why in hell ANYBODY, for ANY REASON would even consider a cashier's check. I guarantee you a personal check is more likely to go through than most cashier's checks. At least with a personal check you know almost immediately if it's good were as a cashier's check as said above may take up to and beyond 2 months to actually clear. Have him do a wire transfer. Just costs $10 and his back deals with your bank. No muss, no fuss. Just good clean money.

Just so everyone knows, cashiers checks aren't "bad" by default now. Your bank can contact the issuing bank and give them the numbers off the check and they will quickly tell you if it's real or fake. If the issuing bank isn't real, case closed. If it is real, they can run the numbers and tell you if the cashiers check is legit. So, don't automatically assume that cashiers checks are bad. Personal checks take just as long to clear as a bank check unless you cash it at the issuing bank.

If they say anything like "I'll pay you more and you send back the difference" or "my shipper is going to handle the details" then it's a scam. I insist to talk to them over the phone. 99% of these idiots are in some third world country somewhere and don't have the ability to call you.

HERES WHAT TO DO. Open a bank account in your name for this one transaction (you dont want to give him your normal info) have him wire the money into that account once it clears close the account. More than likely it is a scam and once you ask him to wire the $$ he'll go away. I had a deal like this once and thats what I did and they went away
