Hot Rods Gasser Gasser Gasser!! 1962 Falcon Futura with a Nailhead??

hahahahahaha! I definitely laughed out loud on that. The best explanation of the rules I have found so far is on the Byrons Gasser Madness site. If it's wrong, I would love to know exactly what the rules were.

From BGM site:

"Just by way of providing information for those who aren’t quite sure what “engine setback” means, a 10% setback would allow the engine to be moved back enough so that the forward most sparkplug in the engine could be no further than 10% of the wheelbase behind the front axle centerline. In other words, if the car had a 100" wheelbase, the front sparkplug must be within 10" of the front axle centerline.

The reason that the setback rule was introduced is reasonably simple. There was nothing in the rules that required the original engine in the car to be used. When someone performed an engine swap in a Model A, for instance, chances were that they would have to cut the firewall anyway. The question then becomes “what is the “stock location” for a flathead V-8 in a Model A?”. Introducing an engine setback limitation merely provided a level playing field for all competitors."

 

yeah i read the same thing and had to edit my post- i thought it was 10% of the original engine location but that would only work for stock mills not swapped ones.

i just checked some pics of mine, and have the front exhaust port on the pass head even with the axle, Which means the plug is about an inch behind the axle. Now this passenger head is the rearward head on a mopar, so the number one cylinder (on the driver side)is actually a touch ahead of the axle.

If you put your front plug 10" behind that axle, you're right- that's WAYYY back! How streetable will she be once the headers are built? lol (mid engine zoomies?)

 

Not very streetable at all. 3.5 gallon tank, no front brakes, no lights, zoomies etc....make a pretty horrible street car. I've also been toying with going A/FX with it and putting a 6-71 Mooneyham blower on it. That wont help streetability either hahaha.

Update #4

Made a plastic sheet template for the fenderwells. I used some gray primer to mark the cut. You dont have to worry about tape moving etc... when it's done this way. The tires are 30" tall, so I made the fender opening 32.5"

Taped it on to the fender after some careful measurement....





Got out my trusty angle grinder with a small wheel on it. I like the control this affords me. Cut Cut Cut.....



This is where the tire will sit when its on the ground.

So.....as I mentioned earlier, I bought the car for $200. Since then, I have sold parts off it for a total of $300. I love it when a car pays ME. haha. I still have all the side trim to sell now too.



I'll have some more updates tonite. Gonna have an axle in front!

 

If it's the one I am thinking of, the article is titled "Big Indian With Falcon Feathers". Ranchero w/Ford pickup beam axle (narrowed), Pontiac engine, can't remember what transmission.

 

Update #5

Finally got all the spot welds drilled out for the suspension mounts. Man thats ugly!



Cleaned up the rails for the addition of a curved piece of 2.5x1.5 3/16ths box tubing. This will give the wimpy rails some much needed strength.



Cutting the square tube to conform to the factory rail. this will be welded and ground smooth before it is then clamped to the factory rails.



Welding the square tube on. I also filled the spot weld marks



Cleaning up the filled spot welds...



Rail support all welded in place...
This will be tied in with a full subframe later.



Front and rear spring hangers welded in place....



Finally! On the wheels!

The front wheels will NOT stay red, I will most likely just paint them black or white. They are only temporary till some spindle mounts magically show up on my doorstep. The gross tires will go away in the next couple days as well, and be replaced with a set of Hurst Super Cushions.

The front of the car will drop an inch or two when the powerplant gets dropped in. Oh ya!

 

Heres The seats that are going in eventually. I bet ya can't guess what they are from.

and....yes....I will be pretty much sitting in the back seat.

I seen this one at the Atlanta World of Wheels and then a gasser dream came about from this car alone. Im not keen on the chevy engine part but i would still drive thie shit out of this. Put a ford in it and its my dream gasser....they remind me of each other.
