I made the mistake of buying a pair of the ebay cast hemi valve covers. The obrien look alikes that are unmachined. well i just got a call from the guy thats doin the machine work and there is not enough meat in the casting to cut them deep enough for stock plug tubes. Does anyone make plug tubes that are .500-.600 longer than stock? these are for a 354 chrysler.
i,ve got a set of steel tubes that are a little too long f. my chrysler hemis i think they are desoto.
We need the length of your tubes first. There are 3 different lengths used throughout the years in early hemis. I have several sets of the longest factory tubes. They are steel. If those dont do it, you will have to contact someone doing TF or TAD stuff. All kinds of lengths available there.
Or you could simply take 2 sets of tubes, cut to the appropriate length and Tig weld them together. You will have the exact length you need.
Thanks desoto, that is the same conclusion we came up with. Buyer beware, there is more work than just machining the tube holes if you buy the ebay covers.
Call Moon Racing. I got a set for my Desoto from them. They are for the 392 motors. They were about 9/16" longer than stock and I made a set of 1/2" aluminum spacers to fit under the valve covers to make up the difference. I had to raise the valve covers a bit because I'm getting ready to build a set of aluminum rocker arms for my engine and they will be taller than stock and will have adjusters that need more clearance. If you look at my avatar you'll see the blue spacers under the valve covers. Hope this helps, Bill
I think they're about 3/8" shorter than mine too - don't know how that works out. I ***ume you didn't get the Nitrile seals mine come with (nor the stainless steel ****onheads and washers.) I'd like to hear how you made out. From a previous post on the HAMB: All DeSoto tubes & 56-58 Chr. are 6 1/4"51-3 Chr are 6 13/16", All Dodge & 53-55 Chr are 5 29/32. Dennis
