i have a 54 chrysler 331 hemi that I'm rebuilding but there are 4 pistons stuck in there bores and i cant get them to move at all dose anyone have any advice to get them out
Tried a search? There are quite a few threads about this. I ***ume they're rusted? There's all kinds of things that will work, it's pretty much a matter of personal preference.
the motor over heated and thats how it hot stuck and it sat for a while and caused it to rust also the pistons have been soaked in liberal amounts of wd40 and liquid wrench
liquid wrench and wd40 wont touch that. 50/50 mix of atf and acetone from hardware store. Let it soak (days) keep the rings covered up with the mix. give it a week, get a board against the piston with your ex's yearbook photo glued to the end, grab your favorite bfh, and go to town. Actually violent wailing isn't good- if you get violent, you run the risk of busting the wall, so let her soak another few days. Some one posted about using oil of wintergreen (?) from a drug store. Get some and do one piston with it and report back which is better, lol. It's fun! It's science! It's a chance to contribute a learning experience to the HAMB!
Soak that engine like they said for days if need be. ATF and acetone in a 50:50 is good ****.......do NOT hammer directly on those slugs! Use a board or br***......something soft. Hammer like a jack *** and it will totally eat those walls and maybe leave you a little broken hearted. Patience is a virtue. Are you sure they're rusted tho? When mine got hot, it GALLED the pistons to the walls and I had to break them all out, then junked EVERYTHING. ****ing waste that was.
Think about it as one piston is stuck. Concentrate on one at a time. Do not beat on it with a bfh. Fill the bore, top or bottom, don't matter, with soapy water. With the water on one side of the piston, heat the other end until it boils. Keep it boiling until you get tired. Let it cool for a day then go again. After a few days of that drill, set up a rig with a chain and a hydraulic jack. Remove the water, heat piston with a mapgas torch until it smokes then jack it out.
Get out your drill motor and a ½" bit and start drilling about a zillion holes through the tops. At some point the rod will come free and then you can collapse what is left of the piston.....stay clear of the walls... .
Diesel fuel works very well also. I use a long rod after soaking, and hammer out the pistons from below. Sometimes you punch through the top of the piston or the head comes off the pistons, but all this does is loosen the piston up and it usually comes right out then. Haven't busted a cylinder wall yet after soaking with diesel for a few days.
I have had good luck with pb blaster I had a 6cyl in mustang motor lock up filled the cyl with pb buster let it sit for a week and was able to rock it free and actually have it running I also did a 370 pontiac but that one was out of the car and I tilted it so one bank was straight up and down let it sit wor aweek then did the other the 6 I have no idea how bad it was just that it was locked but the pontiac I pulled the heads off and had to beat the pistons with a 2x4 and big hammer while working a breaker bar on the front but it did break free I also have a 330 desoto I am going to have to try it on I mght try that 50:50 but I did have luck with pb buster
have had good luck with pb blaster and diesel fuel in the past, but recently tried the acetone and atf worked great.
Ever heard of Kroil? Best rust penetrant in the world. Made by Kano Products. Probably on the web. I'v been using it for over 25 years. If you can't find them E-mail me and I will get you the address.
