just woundering how long is to long for a block/trans/rear end to sit outside in the weather?????????? before they are wasted
Depends on how much work you want to do later. Your question seems like a dumb question to me but really, there is no place you can tuck them inside?
If they are all attached together you will be in better shape then if they were all sitting out there in pieces - however leaving them to side outside is not ideal in any situation.
it depends...was the intake/carb/water outlets covered or sealed so snow/water could not get in? was it drained of coolant? i let a flathead sit outside in the snow all last winter after sealing it up and it's fine rear ends can sit outside for years..unless it's a torque tube and water can get in it
I knew a guy with lots of engines and no garage. He would save drain oil from oil changes and pour it down the intake until it overflowed, wrapped all openings with plastic, and covered them with old car hoods. Messy, but effective.
Pull it out of the car and dump it in a drainage ditch-1 month to a year Seal it up and cover it properly- almost indefinitely Frank
Chicago? I give whatever it is no matter how well you wrap it about 1 year, basically 1 good winter season and then you are into some major rebuilding work. Get it up off the ground and you can maybe extend that another year or 2. Indoors, indefinitely. The problem with wrapping it good outside, is it still has to be looked after and maintained so the cover doesn't get deteriorated, knocked off, etc. after some time which it always does. Tarps leak or even worse hold the moisture UNDER the cover and rust and mess up things out even faster than if they were just left out in the open. Good cover or protection usually needs to be looked after, but usually doesn't and then next thing you know something is ruined before you know it.
o.k. sorry guys! the parts in question are not mine(yet). was woundering because i have read about guys saving engines and so fort that have been in the weather for some time. was just thinking if these are saveable i will get them(free). what it is, by me there is a place were stuff getts dumped, and a friend saw this and told me. i looked at it last year.it is a 65 ford 4dr.289 auto.... benn there for who knows how long maybe 5 to 12 years.
Well, as an example, I bought an Ford flathead 59A engine that was rebuilt in the late 60s, was mounted in a front half of a 42-47 pickup chassis buckled up to the transmission covered with a canvas tarp for about 20 years and stored in the yard next to garage in East Houston. After changing the oil...it had never been fired, spinning it a time or three by hand, cranking it a little by starter to oil her up and giving it some ignition juice it lit right off and ran fine. Since it has now been stored inside my garage for the last 20 years it should still be good, he said cheerfully. Covered and closed up, oiled, should last many years. Sitting in a car anywhere except an enclosed garage unknown whether the coolant was drained...that's a toss up.
Hmmm, i'd say on that one, you probably need a bore, at worst a sleeve in the cyliders with open valves, who know, you could have a cracked block from ice too, any motor is a gamble though, i'd assume the crank is probably good though because it's pretty hard for water to seep through the bearings, but this is only from personal experiences though
hey i know it looks bad, buddie will not listen to me..(he wants to try and save it) i said let see what the experts say(hambers).. then i will spend the day day cutting trees to get to it.
'65 Ford 289? Man, your buddy has got to have better things to do with his time than try to save that one. If that was an old Ferrari, guys would be all over it. But, let's faced it, that one is waiting to be reborn as tuna cans.
hey this guy is not the sharpest tool in the shed... he just want it to say he got it and saved it..... i'm just woundering how the heck to get it out off there if i have to go with him, or just go with the camera to take picks of him doing it........don't even want to think about the bottom of it...to drag it out of the trees.....hopefully when he see what every one here has to say he will rethink... i told him i will sell him my 429 to forget this idea.
wtf ???? this tops it for the most interesting question i've seen for a while GREAZY HUBCAPZ CC East Tn
I dont see why everyone is against it, why the hell not? Sure there is a 80% chance the block isnt worth it, but what the hell, call it an adventure, What's the worst, you are out an afternoon, a case of beer and a tetnis shot?? BTW i have a flathead i got for free that had been sitting out for 20 years, i even saw a frog crawled outa the intake, pulled it apart, and the block needs a bore, but it is well within reason and it even had a merc crank too
95% chance it's not worth it and the worst would be getting hit by a tree that fell on you and while you were lying on the ground trying not to die you get arrested for trespassing. But what the heck, if there's beer involved and a buddy,go for it. Just don't drink the beer and run the chainsaw at the same time.
no chance on the cops....the buddie is one where this thing is,, i owe him a favor and this is how he wants me to repay him.. trying to get out of this deal.... i dont thing it is worth it, have not seen what the trans or rear end look like, just the pics he sent me............wish he would just buy the 429.....
I bet the A/C brackets and pulleys would get some interest on Ebay. The compressor might be good for a core.
