I noticed that too Matt....but to tell you the truth i wasn't sure.......Still not sure!! But he did a great job, not bashing his work!!!

  12. I agree. The black one is very well done. Restraint.

I like the shape of the windows. Almost like a Coupe shape to it...Definately different.

Looks like a coupe rear window grafted onto the door.

To me, this is a great looking Merc sedan chop! Nice flow...not too radical.

  17. ditto on the black 'work in progress' one, restraint/balance/proportions.
So, more out of curiosity then, what size front & side window openings are they? can anyone confirm?
    Cheers,

Neckters car is way cool!! Rickster, thanks for all the cool pics! I like the chop on that brown primered one. Is that red one yours? Holy **** that's cool!! That black one right above this has a real nice chop. I like all the chops where the rear window flows and slopes down like a coupe. Bad Bob, any side shots of the black primer with white ragtop Merc? This post rocks!! I've never been more happy to own a 4 door Merc.!!!

  19. in all these pics examine all the profiles of the upper part of the rear door.. Maxwells (3 pics in red primer on my previous post)appears to be the most severe chopped as the rear edge of the roof has moved up on the door a few inches ..
now I agree access into that suicide rear door was a awkward sight for a chick in a skirt but the end result once back there was worth it..
sorry to say that area was reworked heavily around the rear window .. at first ths area of it was actually a trough and held water at the top of the window frame ..without ruining the other work it was raised artificially with filler..:(
and a plexiglaas (legal?) windshield was used ...
dunno the dimension of the top chop .. a large A/W root beer mug would not p*** thru the driver door without turning it sideways.. some one must have a mug to measure and let us know ..

this was done in 1980 and I have not seen this car since 1984

im guessing the black one is cut around 3.5 in the front and a little more in the back maybe 4.5". the rear door window just looks like they reshaped it and it looks great to me. i planned on doing the same thing to one eventually.. looks alot sleaker

  21. Yes, very good guess. That's right on! The windshield openings are 12", and the side windows are 9" at the widest point. I wanted to chop it more, but I'm very glad we didn't now. Tastes change as you get older, and this chop is almost ten years old. We spent alot of time on the rear window frames to reshape them like a coupe. Thanks for the compliments from everyone.

The rear windows make the car Burns. It really looks good.

  23. Thanks. It really was alot of work. I don't remember how many different pieces we ended up cutting the door frames into, but it was a bunch. The whole section of the sail panel above the rear door frames, and inner structure is hand fabricated. Which, when I look on the HAMB now a days doesn't seem like much, but to us at the time seemed like alot. Sam did the entire p***enger side and I did the drivers side. We cut the work right down the middle. The only thing I really regret, is removing the drip rails. But, like I said my tastes changed alot, and at the time I was really into alot of the Mercs Barris built. None of them had drip rails.

  25. any chance of some more detail photos of the rear door window opening, as well as from inside, and how the 'extension' of the window area was cut into the body?

can see it would have required alot of fabrication, and vision on how to approach, as its a bold moove, but certainly reaps its own rewards, as it looks balanced.

    Cheers,

Burns, maybe you could start a new thread with some photos of the car and some detail photos of the whole rear side window / sail panel area?

  27. Yes, no problem. I still have a ****load of build pics, I just need to dig them up and scan them. Sam (Oldsmopile) basically took step by step pictures of the whole chop.
