I'm having trouble deciding on what to do with the roofline of my 29 model a truck. It's a custom truck built from a 29 coupe cowl and doors and custom made cab corners. I want a flattened profile roof similar to the look of the original pickup, but I don't like the pickup visors. I have a 30 model a visor here and wanted to do something with it like what's done on the T coupe in the photo attached. I've read on different threads about wind noise around the visor and wondered how bad it really is? I've never driven in a car with a visor. If it's annoying at all, it would probably annoy me like crazy. I'm thinking maybe I should go for something like what's seen in the other picture of a fellow hambers former truck (NOT MY TRUCK).....attached. No visor and certainly less work. Opinions?
Hahaha, cmon now! I'm using a stock shell that's channelled a bit to work with my alignment, a shortened rad from Walker and a "lakes style" louvered hood from rootlieb. Although I do kind of dig that tractor grill
I prefer a visor. I think it makes cars look a little more mean, and it adds a bit of personality. The question of noise all depends on what exhaust you are running. If you exhaust exits at the rear of the vehicle, there may be some noticable noise at higher speeds, but if you have headers that basically dump out into your face, you won't hear a thing. My visor (and most visors) do flap up and down a bit, so if you add one, ensure it is attached well. Good luck.
I like my visor on my 34 truck no real wind noise that gets annoying. course I coulddn't really tell over the sound of the headers. But it does impair stoplight vision. Nice ride! but I'm with Zman don't run the tractor grill the trucks too nice for that.
use the visor, but punch large holes in it for better view at high traffic lights and to not end up with the wind noise. That is one of Boyd Coddington's creations that you have as an example. I agree with zman, lose the tractor grill. Have fun
Sorry for the miscommunication, that A truck isn't mine. haha. I just used that pic to show the example of a no visor set up on a truck like mine. Here's a pic of mine...don't mind the rear panel...just playing around with chop possibities at the time the pic was taken. Since decided not to chop at all.
I like the ride like it is, whover's it is, it's not cookie cutter. I like visors, but I like that one without. The BIG eyes look great too.
Model A were meant to have a visor, they don't look quite right without them. I put a '30 visor on my '29 coupe, haven't noticed any vibration, or wind noise. My headers are right outside the door so that might affect the ability to here wind noise. Mine is chopped 3", so seeing traffic lights is a little more problem. I got one of the little prisms to see lights, so it's not a big deal. Red
Did you just mount the visor on the front of the A pillar then fill the gaps between the above door panels? Also, how did you attach the roof panel to the visor?
A visor is not a necessity but it does complement the roof/windshield transition. You need not use a big 26-27 Model T/ 28-29 Closed Cab Pickup visor which is actually a framework with a cloth cover in stock form, or the slightly smaller 28-29 P***enger solid steel visor. The 30-31 A visor is a good alternative and you could make up something shorter ala early 30s Chevy which would fill the style bill but not infringe on your vision too much.
So the general consensus is...if there is wind noise, who cares....deal with it cuz the visor looks good?!?!? I think the visor looks better too...maybe I should go with the 30 visor and do the front of the roofline like the Boyd T Coupe. Any more opinions or pictures of different ideas would be appreciated though. Thanks!!
Mine is 29 coupe and is much more rounded above the doors than your truck. That might make it a little more difficult to adapt a 30 visor to the a pillars. I mounted the visor to the wood header and made a panel to cover the wood and fit between the metal header piece and the 30 visor. I mounted the visor to the front of the a pillar. I made a couple of filler pieces to go from the piece above the door to the visor. I also filled the roof at the same time, with a top out of a 72 Vega station wagon. I mounted the roof piece to the lip at the top/front of the visor. Here's some pics. they don't show the build very well, but that's all I could find. Let me know if I can help. Red
as for vision for stop lights.. thats why they put the lower ones to your left.. I have driven too many cars with poor visibility and that light to the left is my dear friend. as for the look of the visor.. they look awesome. makes the car look mad to me... or is it mad at me? lol
I understand alot of people are programmed on autohate for Boyd's cars...but..... I don't know how anyone could say anything bad about how they used the 30 visor with with the flat roof on that T coupe. It's the nicest T coupe roof/visor combo I've ever seen. If you've got any pics of anything better lets see em!
Sorry my wallet and my mind don't match up... That car was one of his cooler cars but I can't handle that quarter window.
