Car springs make a good *******, go to 'metal meet forum' and they'll have lots of examples.

  4. i misplaced my slapping file and took a big cross cut file and heated it red to bend it into a ******* worked good, but out of ballance,
found my good one back finally
lots of things will work with torch gas , brains, and persistance - hammer on guys carefully , still got a lot of winter left:cool:

i WOULD THINK YOU COULD MAKE SOME GOOD PRY BARS FOR LIKE IN QUARTERS FROM HEATED AND SHAPED CAR SPRINGS, EVEN IF YOU RUIN IT AFTER GETTING THE BENDS OUT, IT CAN BE A THROW AWAY
    ops on the screaming

da tinman - wow...that is some serious ambition, ingenuity and bump chasing. i can only imagine the kind of oil canning you had to deal with.

I have made several *******s from springs myself.... I a piece of rebar on it at just the right angle, then polish it til it's flat and true with a slight chamfer on the edge. I also like to use old suspension rubber bump stops as dollies when working extremely thin metal...it seems to work better than a solid dolly on the thin stuff, as it gives just slightly enough for the metal to have it's own 'springback'. I'll get some pics of them up.

have some *******s from springs also, but you'd never know after all the polishing and shaping over the years. also a small anvil made from rr track and several of my "universal' dollies were made from rr track also.

Actually it was fun, and more of an oil barrel than a can.:D

Long ends of busted springs work real good between the structure and skin, its fits between the 2 and is plenty strong for prying and pounding..

I've got to second that, Tinman. I'm super impressed with your work. I'd like to know your magic cusswords. I've tried every one I know.

i spent most of my years working on trucks, i took a truck spring, put a notch in it to knock ball joints out, back then we didn't have store bought tools like today, you found something close and made it work, i told the boss once that we made do with so little that we wouldn't know how to work with proper tools.

Here are the *******s that I used to make, I've given a few away at past Metalmeet events. Its just a chunk of spring and the end of a bicycle handlebar. Theres a shot of some of my dollies, some homemade, some bought. And a shot of some of my hammers, *******s and mallets.
Some homemade some were Metalmeet prizes
