This morning I was p***ing by a friends house and noticed he had one of these parked out by his barn. Looks to be in similar shape but I KNOW it wasn't there a week ago. Might have to stop by on the way home - cab overs rock, but these fords are just awesome.

As far as your ch***is goes... maybe a later model dually ch***is?

man i wish i can find one around here that didnt cost me a arm and a leg and probable the wife

  5. If you are doing a hauler, look around for an old school bus, not OL SKOOL, but just a plain old school bus. they are often discarded very cheap. They have had very good maintenance schedules, required by law. Most of the have diesels and automatic transmissions. Bad part is they are air brake, that could be fixed by getting your license.

why not find a GMC fwd motorhome ch***is and make the rear low slung for hauling vehicles like they are on a car trailer. easy on and off.

  9. I have an old 74 Chevy rollback tow truck with a rotted cab that would be perfect for that. The new 350 in it has less than 10k. Clutch too. If insurance wasn't the issue I'd still be using it. I've been looking for a cab but have too many projects to deal with it now. Buy it cheap!

I'd look for a motorhome with a bad "home" part and good running gear. once the back half rots out they are pretty cheap.

  13. Yeah, like $600 for a fairly low miles '73 with a 440. Not running just because nobody tried, dry rotted tires and a bad leak in the roof that made the floors soft and the inside smell funky. Find out where the kidney foundation liquidates its junkers they have donated to them, it's probably a public auction.

  14. Its at least a 48 though. The jail bar grill was still in use in 47. The "monkey face" came out in 48. Not that this really matter but you might want to know. Sure would make a neat hauler though, I have a soft spot for COE's. There is a whole "show off your COE" picture thread somewhere on here that pops back up evry now and then. Good luck with the project keep us posted.

If you can find a ragged 3/4 ton van, the steering is easier to convert than a conventional rig. I have a buddy with a 56 COE on a 3/4 Dodge van ch***is.

A pickup bed on it would be cool, and a scratch-built frame. That "other site" has some good suggestions too. :)

I was going to mention the monkey face only starting in 48, but wasn't sure if COEs were different and didn't want to stick my foot in my mouth and appear to be an ***.
Good to know I've not completely lost my marbles!

Can someone tell me how these compare interior room-wise to a standard pickup of the same make and year range? I've never had the pleasure of sitting in one and have always wondered what they are like.

  18. There is a COE user group here. Check out the social groups.

vintagehotrods is building one, he has a good thread going as well.

Very cool. I wished I would have kept one of my COE's I've had some nice ones but never had a Ford.

The cabs are a little cramped compared to the conventional cab. I sold a '48 to a guy who had a '48 COE mounted on a Winnabego motor home ch***is with a custom roll back. It was a very cool truck. Later he sold it to a old Ford parts vendor who mounted a straight box on it.

There are are couple of guys on the FTE site who have COEs on different ch***is.

These belong to a member named 48fordcoe

I thought about doing a project like this. I'd put it on a super short frame to where the rear wheels came up right behind the cab. Maybe put a tiny bed on it that looks more like the size of a flower box. Make the cab look almost comical in size.

Anyway.. just my thoughts. Or you've seen the two-fer? Just turn the cab into the actual car...

Tommy, I always heard that the 1 ton vans were the ones to use for building a COE. Are the 3/4 ton ones the same?
