Hey all! I'm thinking about making some of my own air cleaners a lot like the old tall style edmunds ones. I've got the tops and bottoms I want to use but was curious what the best thing to used for filtering media is. I was planning on doing a tightly woven chicken wire interior and punched sheet metal exterior. I just need to know what will work best between those layers. I'll post pictures once I figure out what I'm doing!

    Thanks!

TOILET PAPER! Oh wait, that's oil filters.:)
Seriously though, I'd use wire screen with layers of gauze. Then I'd spray it filter spray like they use on K&N. Biggest problem will be getting a good seal at the top and bottom. Or you could use foam furnace filter material.

    and air dryers!

  5. How about just getting a late model filter, and cutting out the shape you need to go between the screens, chicken wire, etc.?

x2, then just have your outer material cover it up.

  7. The K&N filter site has a section where you can search for filters by size and shape. I made my own for the SU carbs on my Volvo 1800.

By late model filter do you mean one of the paper element kind? The problem I've having with that is they aren't tall enough for what I want to do.

@Nutajunka: See thats what I've been doing! Great minds think alike. I just like being a little fancier than that and wanted to figure out how to make my own.

    However!

@ RoadAmerica, That K&N site is REALLY specific on the sizes you can browse. They have one I think I'll get and cut the flange out of. seems pretty simple and I hear AMAZING things about their filters. Plus I like the idea that they will supposedly last forever.

I agree on the K&N also, but one more thought is tractor's and semi's have tall filters. Just something to think about.

  14. I was thinking something like this inside whatever air cleaner you want to build.

I've always been worried that style wouldn't flow right.
