England Hamb'ers, can you help?

  1. Hey Guys,

May have a line on some scarce parts that I've been looking for, or I may be in the midst of a scam attempt.

A guy who we'll just call Jerry gave me the following information:

    Jerry *******
    HG2 7, England.
    jerry*********@gmail.com
    Cell#: +44702408****

He requested payment by Moneygram/Western Union, which doesn't work for me. I asked him to send an invoice through PayPal, to which I await his response.

My question to the England HAMB'ers is this:

If he will allow an acquaintance of mine to come to his location and pick the item(s) up, are any of you willing to help out? I'd feel much more comfortable handling it this way. I haven't yet tried to call him, and have no idea where in England he is based on his address, but I can send you his phone # if you want to call him.

  2. If thats all the address he gave you, its not enough..This "HG2 7**" needs 2 more letters or numbers to find him, UK postcodes will narrow the search to within 8 or 10 houses.

But yeah, it sounds like a scam, unless its Jerry D******

  3. Nope...different Jerry...

Thanks for the tip on the address. I am hoping he'll go for PayPal...because it's stuff that I REALLY want...but my gut tells me it's a scam, so I'm not going to be stupid. It was a reply to an add on fordbarn.com, which is a kissing cousin to craigslist IMHO.

Check the FordBarn.com think I have seen that quite a few times and it is a scam

Think they evn have a sticky listed about it

    " FORD BARN "
"IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not do business with UK people offering "too good to be true" items. DO NOT send Western Union or Money-Gram payments. Ask questions and ask for photos."

  5. HG2 is somewhere in North Yorkshire, so that hopefully will ***ist if someone back home in the UK can ***ist.

  6. I know that Western Union/Money Grams are a no-no, and am aware of the typical scam angles.

I am really just looking for someone on the HAMB, who I'd be more likely to trust than a name on an email, to act as my "agent" to pick up the parts. We can work out any details regarding the $$ after the seller decides it's acceptable, or disappears.

If he gets squirrely with the local pickup offer, he's obviously a scammer as far as I'm concerned. I think we all prefer local cash and carry on parts.

A32Flathead, thanks for the information on the address. I may try to call him today as well to sort this out.

  7. I got a response from him from a wanted ad I put on fordbarn. He lurks there and someone already posted on that site warning about him. He will have whatever you need, just send him a money order. I don't think so Tim. Can you spell SCAM. Pat.

UPDATE, Sorry, I just checked my sent emails and his name was Larry Chapman. Fordbarn cautions against dealing with people in England responding to wanted ads. People are getting scammed. They also say don't send Western Union money orders. I would suggest getting someone in England on the hamb to check out the parts for you before you buy. Pat.

  8. Thanks for the PM Pat...

  9. Check...
    Check...
    and Check...

    Awaiting photos...

Not my first overseas transaction, and have had a few successful ones as well, so I hate to pigeon-hole everyone over there. I understand the scam angle.

The purpose of this thread is to get in contact with someone across the pond who is willing to pick up the parts for me, and accept payment from me. I also posted on the UK social group...

I'm in the UK, PM me if you want, I'll call the guy and make arrangement to collect, though I tend to agree with all of the comments it's more than likely a scam.

  14. Chances are that its a Nigerian scammer with a PO Box

  15. Corn Coupe & 33HEMI, I sent you guys his phone# and my own. Appreciate the help!

I am not optimistic, but still have hope...

  16. I agree...

Maybe he's just a putz though. I have had great transactions with international buyers from New Zealand, Australia, Holland, England, Germany, and UK...too bad that guys like this sour the opinion on international trading in our hobby.

    , Will Robinson!

0702 numbers are NOT cellphone numbers. It's a non-locational 'PN2' personal number, which will charge at 50 pence per minute.

  20. Western Union Money Orders are not a common way to do business in the UK - smells of Nigerian scammer to me.

Interesting that he wouldn't give you the last two letters of his post code because that would narrow it down to a few houses in the street.

If you are after parts that are best sourced in the UK simply join the British NSRA as a guest and post on there - lots of people only too happy to help, especially if you can reciprocate the favour.

  23. I'd go as far as to say that if someone saying they're from the UK wants a Western Union Money Order then they're almost certainly a scammer and almost certainly not British.

I can confirm it is a scam unfortunately.

It's a real shame, these crooks try and take advantage of people, and they only add to the disbelief of selling or buying parts outside of your own country.

Nonetheless we HAMB brothers and sisters can help each other out worldwide.

  25. So what were the rare parts you were looking for ?

  26. I've been trying to find a set of Edelbrock finned aluminum Y-block valve covers. He allegedly had a pair of these, and a very nice 573 manifold for a price that was within reason. Not cheap, which would raise red flags, just what I'd consider fair trade pricing.

Corn Coupe and 33HEMI, I really appreciate the help.

As soon as I told "Jerry" that I had a friend in his neighborhood that would come by to cash & carry the parts for his asking price it was (not surprisingly) radio silence...

This doesn't sour my opinion of international trading of parts at all. I've bought & sold to Europe, Australia, and South America. From $10 stickers, to my old Riviera (which went to Holland). There's scammers everywhere, you just have to keep your eyes wide open and be smart.
