How many of you have said I am just going to fix this one or two little things on the vehicle and that is all and once you get started it's like opening a can of live worms and they are going everywhere. This is what has happen on my 33 Dodge pickup it was going to be fix those couple of things and that's all, but once I got started well since I am this far may as well fix this then that on and on it seems. Does it only happen to me ?
No see my "I'm just gonna throw a gloss paintjob on my truck to finish it up" below.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=320267 Turned into a frame off with a section thrown in for good measure...I call it the "snowball effect" It tends to happen to me often.
Hell no, thats a worldwide disease. Did that with a 69 Valiant VF coupe (aka Dodge Dart 2 door). Took the fender off to fix a dent, there was a bit of rust in the right rear guard. etc, etc, etc....ended up selling it in bits to buy a Willys, which then got traded on a 34 Dodge but thats a whole different story.
...as long as it's a car you really like it's OK. needed to replace the head gasket on an OT car , then I wanted to detail the engine compartment, next thing you know it's on my rotissirie and completely dis***embled. should have sold the car when the gaskets blew.
Naaah, happens to a lot of us, it's part of the affliction. Actually, a lot of times you're just not aware that this-or-that needs attention until after you get deeper into it. Besides, once I get something torn apart and laying on the floor, I like to get everything I can done at once, even though it may take longer and cost more, so's I won't have to do all that work over again. (Sounds good in theory anyway, but my rule of thumb now is - maybe the 3rd time it'll be fixed for good)
I have know idea what your talking about. All I'm gona do is freshen up the motor, build a transmission crossmember, and change the body mounts. That was 11 years ago.
ProStockJohn is the king of worm can openers. At least for the last year or so. I'm going to run him a close second with the Model A cowl I picked up turning into an A V8 sedan over the next couple of years though.
Blown lower rad hose lead to complete engine compart detail and strip to gelcoat and repaint of a C3 Vette several years ago.....
my cam swap and cylinder head upgrade turned into a new stroker short block and upgraged my trans from standard t5 to a world cl*** cl*** ratio trans.
Peter Eagan of Road & Track did a fabulous column on this topic a few years ago. He went to change a light bulb in a dashboard and proceeded to completely dis***emble the car. We have a local midget racer that strips his car down to the frame each week and then can't figure out why he's always late getting to the track.
After you fix everything, you get bored, sell it and buy another one and fix it,its not a disease, its a lifestyle, some got it some don"t,when you see a grown man that can"t put his spare tire on HE AIN"T GOT AND NEVER WILL!
lets see got a 1950 coronet it was gonna be rebuild the carb do a tune up and drive it. then it was put a 360 in it, then it was put a low mile motorhome 413 in it. then it was put disc brakes on the front, then its rebuild the 413 and make motor mounts, now its dakota front frame clip swap, 600hp nitrous squirted 413 mini tubs and a posi in the back. then its........
It happens to everyone - but the way I look at it, its more time out in the garage with the car and beer and less time in the house doing the honey list !!! And thats ok with me !!!!
I keep telling people, "Nothing's ever simple". It's a rule of life. True story: Had a flat tire. Simple flat tire was really a bent rim. Bent rim concealed buckled a-frame. Fixing the a-frame messed up the kingpin. Then there's While You're At It syndrome - in above example, did the tie rods too.
It happens here all the time,a thief broke in my 65 custom 500 to steal a stereo I carefully put in the original radio location and while the dash was apart I installed the 2 speed wipers and washer,I had to replace the broken vent wing so I put in better window and vent regulators while I was in the door. I put a new motor in my 66 F250 shop truck and now its apart for paint.
