My Merc is in the shop getting a new 350/700r4 combo. I will be swaping from the '93 model TBI fuel injection to a carb. I need verification that I can take a plain jane SBC edelbrock manifold, like this 2701 from Jeg's, and angle out the 4 center holes to match the 4 center holes in the heads. I don't want to have a pretty wall hanging. Thanks.
I have done the same thing on a performer rpm ( too cheap to buy a new manifold when swaping engines) . I made aluminum wedges to make up the angle difference and used longer bolts.
i have done jus the oposite. Put TBI intake on old heads. i used an endgrinder and deburing bit and all was fine
I've done a few. Very simple. Just do a little bit at a time and keep checking. It's easier to take a little more out the to add.
Yes they do and they are readily available but I would imagine that he has one of the early style readily available. if I were buying a new manifold I would just spend the extra bucks and be done with it though as for every guy who makes the early manifold work fine, there tends to be one who has trouble with the swap. With that, guys were doing the modification to the manifolds as soon as the later style engines started becoming available in the wrecking yards.
The one guy that will have trouble will be me. I don't think I have the vortec heads on this motor. I know edelbrock makes one, I just can't get a straight answer. It seems nobody wants to touch it if it's not a camaro or truck.
We have done the "angle redrilling" several times, no worries. Infact one of the guys working here at the store did it last year on his and did it himself with no problems. Yes they make intakes for it and if budget allows, great, if not, well you know the story!
Most of the newer intakes come with little spacers for the center bolts at the exhaust cross over so the intake can be used for angled center bolts (55-86) or straight up center bolts (87-95?). Any easy way to tell if it has the straight up center bolts at the exhaust cross over is if it has center bolt valve covers (87 and up) it has straight up center bolts. Just make sure the intake you want says it will fit 87 and up and you will be good to go. If you already have an older style intake to use regrind it, if your gonna buy a new intake might as well buy the correct part.
i scored one for $70 on eBay, bolted right up. Look for part number 2104. I also have one from an 87 engine, aluminum q-jet style. They are out there and easy enough to find. True vortec style is very obviously different.
i made the one im using on my coupe. i made slots from the holes, and had a machinest make me 4 wedges. angled on the bottom, straight on top. no problem. its the best way i know of to do this.
He doesn't have Vortec heads, they're the old iron ones. Just open up the holes on the manifold, and use longer bolts. No worries.
Thanks guys. I think Guthriesmith has what I'm looking for in his shop. I will check when I get back in town monday.
JK i bought a manifold from speedway that its based on the early corvette style it comes wit the adaptors for center bolt heads and its the best purchase i have ever made...here is the link plus the price is right http://www.speedwaymotors.com/1957-95-S-B-Chevy-Typhoon-Manifold,1623.html
small block chevys are great engines but they love even fuel flow,do it right ,get the right manifold now and have no issues later.
Come on Jason, you then just need an ADAPtor KIT!! As in the Johnny Cash song; it's a 51-52-53..............
