I read a while back that if you pour acetone (sp?) into your mufflers prior to puttin' them on it erodes the baffles (not totally) and makes your car louder BUT maintains the tone...I want my flathead to be pretty loud but maintain the flattie sound. Anyone had any luck with this? How long did you leave the acetone in the muffler?
I think that's another one of those "pull you chain" stories. What could it possibly do to steel or fibergl*** packing? Let me know how it turns out. The Wizzard
Acetone woudn't hurt a thing,as far as corrosion goes. We used to put the waterhose up the pipes to rust out gl***packs. On my flathead I pushed metal vacuum cleaner tubes into the gl***packs to make them like straight pipes, but hey I was 16, and didn't have much money for real modifications. Flatheads sound good with gutted out mufflers, like echo cans,1 3/4" pipes with pencil tips. Smaller exhaust tubing will make a sharper high-velocity"rap'. My '50 has 1 1/2" straight pipes with 3"echo cans,to spread the flames bigger. Sparky
Never heard of that... Acetone will melt some plastics, but will have no effect on metal or fibergl***... ...might be an old wives tale.
What else can I do to make it louder? Like someone above mentioned...my neighbor (an old school rodder from the 50's) suggested putting smaller tubes inside the gl***packs...essentially byp***ing the baffles. Would that work? Does it screw up my back pressure?
By the way, from experience, pouring gas down a gl***pack (while off the car) and lighting it on fire to burn the fibergl*** does not work....
I heard alot of guys used to take out one Gl***pack, im gonna try it one day. One straight pipe and one gl***pack. Sounds like it could sound good to me L
Burn out the packing. I learned this trick from an old timer, tried it, and it works like a charm. Take a standard gl***pack (I'd recommend Cherry Bombs since they're cheap and available at Pep Boys), pour gasoline, kerosene or flammable liquid of your liking copiously into the muffler, and light it up. Light it with a fuse to reduce the risk of accident. Once the fire goes out, tap it on the ground, all the burned packing will fall out and you'll have a totally hollow gl***pack with the perforated baffling intact. or sawzall a gl***pack in half, remove the packing by hand, and weld it back together. Either way you achieve the same thing. It'll be loud and rappy, but not as obnoxious as straight pipes.
Bag on your car and get the exhaust super hot, then shove a garden hose up and turn it on, cracks the fibergl*** and sounds killer, or so I'm told.
53ChopTop...what happened? Did it burn long enough? And by the way I've got Smithys...if that makes a difference.
Gl***packs don't have any baffles. The fibergl*** in a gl***pack is a spun wool like fibergl*** wall insulation not like a 32 Ford 3 windows. (sorry I couldn't resist don't get upset) The old timers told me to use kerosene. Maybe it burns longer rather than a flash burn. If you are going to burn out the packing, why not just eliminate them altogether? It's not as loud as you might expect with full tailpipes to the rear. I have no mufflers at all on the 34 P/U with 1 3/4" pipes. (259 CI engine)
When I was 16 (a long tome ago) I was told if you poured oil or ATF in the muffler (glaspack) and ran it, it would plug up the 'gl*** and make it louder. I did it on my '49 Chevy. I don't remember if it worked but we probably shocked the hell out of a lot of people who would have thought it just smoked that bad. Mosquitos weren't as bad for a while though!
powdered iodine, it will turn the insides to **** in two days! get it hot an pour a pepsi in it. the sugar cooks in the vents an plugs the holes.
I tried burnin' the packs with: Kerosene....nothing. Gas...nothing. Even tried burning acetone after letting it sit in there for a while...nothing. Am I doing something wrong (besides ****in up a perfectly good pair of Smithys)? I let each of the fuels burn over an hour each...I even tried turning on the garden hose up the muffler to crack the gl***...nothing. Begining to think these things are bulletproof!!!
With my luck...I'm prolly gonna start my car and shoot two flaming fibergl*** hairballs out the ***-end of my car after all this ****...
Hehe, your problem is you're trying to mess with Smithys. Get some cheap cherry bombs, rip out the baffle tube with a BIG screwdriver and pull out the gl*** with whatever will reach. We only did this so the damned cops could look under the car and see it had mufflers. That and the fact that you could make a pretty good bang by running rich and turning the key on and off . Guess that's why they called them cherry bombs. If that's not a problem, just run straight pipes with a crossover.
Hey Smokin' Joe...My buddy did a nice "key job" with his '56 Chevy...shut off the key and pumped the gas..did it while crusin' the mall right in front of a bus stop...when he lit it off...kaboooom!...an old lady waitin' for the bus jumped about 4 feet into the air...we made one more p*** thru the lot only to find an ambulance headed to the bus stop....we got the hell otta Dodge! (PS..the six banger started runnin' funny after that...we took the top offa one piston!)
I finally got the exhaust on and started the car up...I can't explain it but these gl*** packs are a LOT louder than my last set. Could be better compression in this motor (same flathead as the other) or it could be all the **** I poured in them or maybe the gl*** burned but stayed in there. I don't know but this thing sounds MEAN now...I love it! Thanks for your help guys!
