Next steel-bodied hot rod icon

  1. Not hot rods - but dating from the 50's and 60's - you can get brand new steel bodyshells for Austin Minis, Austin Healey Sprites and Midgets and MG B's. Cheaper than repairing them and made by the same people who made the originals.

I am STILL working on my doors! By the time I am done, they will be 80% hand-made.

A 28-9 A Closed cab would be cool, but the same size as an OG closed cab...

And an all steel 49-51 Merc would be sweet, unchopped, I wanna do the choppage..

I'm at my own peril having to patch F1 fenders and such. Don't expect any repops in the near future, though.

My thought was a steel Willys myself.

Here are a few being built in Lazze's shop. The 36 was done by students and the 5 window is being done by Lazze for a mag.
So 36 roadsters are out their but in a very small quantity!

But they still can make a stock rear pan for a 42-48 Chevy or fenders. The fiberglass stuff just doesn't cut it.

I am betting the 49-51 is too big of a car for this and they do not command the money Deuces and Willys do. I am not seeing the motivation. Maybe more parts for them but I am not so sure you will see a body.

I have passed on way too many mercs over the years, I have been able to find 32's (but could not afford them), and have yet to ever come across a Willys. I am talking about good solid project cars, not competed.

I of course could be wrong, but the other thing that factors into it was the glass mercs were not much of a success and in many cases if the glass seemed to sell in good numbers the steel would follow.

The tri fives and muscle cars of course are not examples of my theory and blow it, but I am still sorta shocked they were made before some of the other options.

I was told that was a one off and not a production car. This has come up several times recently so I got motivated and asked about it.

Steve, I recently was watching a show (Chop cut rebuild?) on a pro touring Cuda build where they had replaced the quarters, hood etc. with repops. I recall the builder saying that virtually all the panels minus the roof were repopped-so they're close to an all steel Cuda.

model A coupe and 49-50 mercury would be my vote, it amazes me noone makes Model A coupe quarters at least...

  22. 33 Willys, especially the grille, 50 Merc, bathtub Porche and split window bugs. In fact I wish someone would come out with an original VW bug except with heat and defrosters.

The 56 ford truck they make is fiberglass, and so is the roof section somebody was looking for.

My vote is the 32 5 window....

Do not forget the early Model T roadsters up to 1925 by Rootlieb. They even sell the wood kits. You do have to assemble yourself.
Anyone building new steel '26 - '27 rear coupe, roadster, RPU rear fenders for the Model T?

Randy Fergason just out of Oblong Ill is building repo steel 40/41 willys he has the patterns to make a complete hand formed car if you have the $$$$$. I hope to have the first of my hand formed 36 Ford roadsters done in about a year.

  26. I wonder if the steel 55 chevy ragtops were a flop? I haven't seen them advertised for a long time. If it wasn't for steve's auto restorations I'd be shit outa luck finding quarters for my 34 five window coupe. I once sold a 32 ford 5 window body when I could not find quarters or the rear window panel to repair an old stock car...looked for a few years and gave up.
My 34 is slowly coming together with those new quarters....my body man loves 'em.
