I picked up a set of standard bore 11-1 327 chevy pistons at the swapmeet today. Are these ok to use if i bore my 283 out?
Its possible . However thats where it ends. Most 283 blocks most likely will not be safe to bore to 4 inches. Then the 327 pistons require a 327 3 1/4 inch stroke crank. the 283 crank is 3 in stroke. Cheaper to buy a set of 283 030 or 060 over pistons.
If you can't part with those pistons and you can't find a clean 327 block. You can take a chance with a 307. I took one out to 4.00 no problem, and it has a 3 1/4" stroke. But what the hell I take chances.
Sometimes the machine shops can sonic check the cylinder walls to see how thick they are......although I'd be surprised if they'd go that big, 4 inches. Plus, they would probably have to do a number of p***es with the boring machine to get it that big.....a li'l more costly.
Well, '58-'62 blocks are supposed to be the best bet to take an overbore to 4 inches, and '62-'67 blocks are the ones that have the proper clearance for a 327 crankshaft, so a '62 283 would be what you'd want.......or just sell the 327 pistons and put the proceeds toward a set of .060 283 pistons and breathe easier when the boring bar starts cutting.
Many (definitely not all ) 283s can be punched out to 4.00. That's the 301 common to the g***er era. But if you use 327 pistons you need a small journal 327 crank or custom (longer con rods). If the crank galley has the factory reliefs at the bottom of the cylinders to clear the 327 crank it would probably take the bore, but you could still find coreshift, porosity and plain old 40 years of rust have left the the walls a little too thin.
