Body damage, how would you attack this?

You can shrink using a smaller, less heavy 7" sander polisher and a full sized shrinking disc. It just takes a little longer to generate the heat required. The full sized grinders can be heavy after a while. Also... leaving the disc on the surface until it stops spinning is safer and easier to do because the gyroscopic effect of the spinning disc is a consideration when setting the tool down.

Donut29 came down today and made it look like childs play, really says something about experiance..
    Thanks again Tom
And Thanks for the lesson, I feel after i have a go at some of the other stuff remaining on the body, I should have a fairly decent grasp of it.
Really helps to watch how its done.

    Yeah, for the most part..
there are a few other problem areas on the body, but Tom stayed for at least 3 hours of banging and B.S.ing
Was great to meet another hAMBer, and he imparted enough of his skills to me ,to allow me to be dangerous.;)
I think I can carry on from where we left off, just got to go score me some hammers and dollies..

He had a bunch of different tools he brought with him, seems like you aquire them thru time and necessity, and it is what he likes to do.
I am going to keep at it, and see how well i picked up from his teachings

boy I'm late for this program, glad you got the help you needed. Metal bumping is really rewarding if you understand it, and it looks like your well on your way now.

There are only two ways you'll learn a new skill. One, find someone who is VERY good at whatever it is and have them teach you. Two, get your tools and learn as you go. One works much better than the other, but which is which changes every few minutes. Looks like a keep the panel and work it job to me. Go for it!!

John Kelly's advice is 100% bang on.

Herer's my advice: Buy yourself a couple good hammers and dollies to start. This place- http://www.tptools.com/Default.aspx - has good prices on Martin tools. Ebay is another option.
Do not buy the $26 sets! They are worthless, misshapen, soft cast iron shit that will only frustrate you. (apologies, old bone). Drop $15 on "The Key to Metal Bumping", read it, and start hammering (lightly...) Once you get on the learning curve, you'll be surprised what you can do. I would also suggest the 9" shrinking disc, one of the fluted ones. Planishes and shrinks at the same time. Hot shrinking is much more ticklish.

Edit: And check out this site: http://allshops.org/cgi-bin/community/cfdirectory.cgi

    Will do Tom

I got a 53 Chevy hood that needs a little banging too, i will play with that a bit next week, and if i get it straightened out it will be worth more to someone..
Thanks again for the teaching, I will definetly put it to good use..got a little more to do on the A
and i have some old steel around here to practice on first..

I think i must have learned something, for what little help i was, i have a blister on my thumb:D

It was amaZing to see the transformation right infront of my eyes..now i know why so many said.."dont cut it out...bang it out"

You said it best! I don't think its a good idee to learn body work on your own car. Get it done by an expert.

Look up shrinking discs on the web I used one from dagger tools to go on a 4 1/2 angle grinder. cheap and easy to use. The best part is you can start slow and redo until you get to shrink enough. Much easier than to try to learn hammer and dolly work on your sedan.

Most of the stuff a shrinking disc would work on is already done, and done very nice with body beating tools..

some stuff that is remaining just has to be done the way of the body hammers.(things that need to come out..not in)

I do intend on eventually purchasing a shrinking disc, but as for now its not needed.

    Things to remember
A dent either in or out has stretched the metal. This is why a shrinking disk will help. It will heat up the high spots and then you cool them with water which will shrink the metal. It is a big trial and error method but usually works out well.
    Good Luck
