I've got what's left of a '51 BelAir in my pile that used to have a '55-'60 Pontiac V8 in it, and it doesn't look like it was very complicated to do, although you'll probably have to eliminate the vent tubes that run through the engine compartment. Being a '56 engine, you may have some trouble finding a suitable transmission for it.
Since there have only been stabs at this I'll take one. The 316 is a 3 point mounted engine. Two back at the ****** and one front and center. To find a good working Hydramatic may not be the easiest either and as a given, (which you are likely looking to do anyways) you'll have to swap out the rear end. So IMO the answer is "not fairly easy" but anything can be done. I did see a later standard transmission adaptor in the ad section once but it was pretty pricey. (and pretty rare).
As stated this engine has a 3 point mount and you would have to fab them. I had a later model 400 in a 52 Chevy which is the same fiscal size as the 316 and the fit is not bad. Heres a couple of pic's taken in 79.
You guys are making me nervous lololo i wanted a easy project i am getting to old and fat to mess around that much any more lololo, it would be cool thou , James
