One of the major reasons in the downturn of our society is that nobody is watching their kids. This comes from mom and dad both working to pay the bills while the babysitter watches soap operas.....I had a hard time financially keeping my wife home with the kids, but it was worth it....absolutly no way I could do it when we lived in Hawaii, as much as I loved it there. I see the same thing in California or any other overpriced part of the US....kids are ripe for the pickin when the gangs come to town. I live in a town with no gangs..no grafitti..no crack whores on the corner...no drive by shootings...(all these things are prevalent on Oahu)...but it snows here...that's my choice.

HotRodHon, I hate to tell you, but you've got it wrong again. Go take a look on Realtor.com or another real estate site and see what houses in Greenfield are going for nowadays. You'll be hard pressed to find a run down 2 bedroom for under $300k. You're link showing the values was getting their info from 4 years ago.

Here's a link, in case you don't feel like searching:

    http://www.realtor.com/FindHome/HomeListings.asp?locallnk=yes&frm=bymap&mnbed=3&mnbath=2&mnprice=0&mxprice=99999999&js=off&pgnum=1&lnksrc=&fid=so&mnsqft=&mls=xmls&areaid=77339&typ=1%2C+2%2C+3%2C+4%2C+5%2C+6%2C+7&poe=realtor&ct=Greenfield&st=CA

Secondly, there's nothing in Greenfield. It's not part of the "Greater Bay Area", or Silicon Valley. It's a bedroom community for people who work elsewhere and drive a ridiculous distance to work everyday. From Greenfield to Mountain View where this dude said his wife's job offer was is 106.19 miles ONE WAY!!! Through Bay Area traffic. Is that a reasonable commute??? I bet there are people doing it. And at what cost to their quality of life?

Not to mention that Greenfield doesn't share in any of the aforementioned good things about California, except the weather and Mexican food. It's not close to anything, I seriously doubt they have a thriving hot rod scene in Greenfield, etc., etc...

I'm not gonna tell thei guy or anyone else whether or not they should live anywhere. And I'm doing my best not to sound like I'm running down California. I'm just saying that if the guy's gonna move here, he should be ready to either pay $600k for a house, or pay $400k for a house and commute 100 miles each way to work, be surrounded by gang bangers, send his kids to school in a broken public school system and pay a lot more for all other goods and services, including those provided the the state government.

There are lots of great things to do here, and some great reasons to live here. But you have to accept the good WITH THE BAD.

And by the way, looking at your profile, I get the impression that you work 2 jobs. An engineer during the day and a tattooer at night. Tell me what other state in the fucking country and ENGINEER has to get a part time job to get by or get ahead?

And you never did answer my question as to how long ago you bought your home and 2 rentals...

That was one of the major "KICKERS" that made my decision to move.My 2 year old son sat in a Damn DAY CARE while that fat bitch sat on her ass watching t.v. and did not give any attention to the children.they sat in front of the tube also.My son is STILL 2 years old and has the development of a 16 month old boy.hes about a year behind in his speech development.I was able to bring my Ca. wages to TN.Now my wife is able to stay home and give my son the attention he needs. All that because of the cost of living.we BOTH had to work fuul time jobs and during TAX season She worked TWO! Tragic59 sir you are right and I am wrong.
I didn't notice that the data on that site was 3 years old. I am just plain out of touch.
    .
I guess I was wrong to not give my personal financial history to you upon request.
Here ya go. The house I live in I bought 4 years ago, but refinanced last year for a 5.25% loan. Payments are about $1500 a month. In that loan I got an extra 30K and put it down on a second house which I rent for $1200 a month. I have a negative cash flow of $100 a month there. That's how you get more houses. When the outrageous prices go up, you leverage the equity and acquire more.
    .
I guess I was wrong when I didn't specify that Greenfield wasn't meant for a commute to Mountain View. It was a response that NOWHERE in California has houses less than $600K People there commute to Salinas, which is about 30 miles away or King City which is 12 miles away. Please reread my earlier posts though and find the one with the 2DAY old newspaper clipping from where I LIVE that has plenty of houses at around $450K. I live 18 miles from my job in the silicon valley (Milpitas) Yep, the commute sucks. It’s 45min to an hour.
    .
I guess I was wrong when YOU assumed I did tattooing full time. I don’t. I use it for trading with other hot rodders and folks. Like my cars, there is no real income from tattooing for me. I enjoy it.
    .
I guess I was wrong when I assumed 33 Million people in California wanted to be here. I guess they are all like me and just don’t pay attention .
    .
I guess I was wrong when I assumed that the laws of supply and demand didn’t apply here in California, just like anywhere else. By that I mean, if the people couldn’t afford to pay those prices, they wouldn’t go that high.
    .
But where I KNOW I was wrong was where I attempted to discuss the pro's n con's with people who had already decided that California sucks and that all Californians were assholes. Or even more so for people who had already decide it was too much work and left. If you have already taken off, I think I know you feel. You spend your time searching the web to back up your opinion, just like I spend my time searching the web (and my local newspaper)to back up mine.
Believe it or not I actually respect your opinion. As I said in an earlier post my only real frustration is people who never lived here telling me how what I have been doing for 30 years is impossible to do.
    .
    .
    .
My boss has a sign that reads:
"Arguing with an engineer is like wrestling in the mud with a pig.
After about an hour you realize they are enjoying themselves."
    .
Maybe supporting the California life style is that way for me too. I enjoy it.

And California has GERM, and lots of people just like him! Sign me right the fuck up!

Hatch has it dead on--two parents working is killing our whole society, just so we can have an Xbox and 30-inch TV in all the bedrooms.

4-bedroom 2.5 bath, full walk-out basement with a bathroom (when I get it framed in and functioning), 1 acre lot with half of it hardwood woods, creek behind that, 1280 sq ft shop, good schools in classrooms that aren't overcrowded, in a nice small town 55 miles NE of Atlanta: $165K. And my wife doesn't need a job to make the ends meet--she's a liscensed massage therapist who sets her own hours, so she can drive the boy to school, and is here when he gets home every day.

Just keep running to the cliffs, lemmings, and jump on in--the water's great. So is the weather, too, from what I hear.

How many engineers do you think there are on this forum?

Not many. Just like there aren't many in society as a whole. It takes a great deal of smarts and education to be an engineer. And for that engineers are well compensated. Supply and demand works in the job market too. Just about any numbskull can flip a burger, which is why when I did it as a teenager, I got minimum wage. And that's why alot of people today get minimum wage.(Not necessarily in CA, I've heard wages upwards of $12 an hour are common at some places...)

I just think it's ridiculous for an engineer to assume that because he's doing it and making it work that ANYONE can, and that anyone who CAN NOT is just a quitter, or a sucker.

There are those who prefer not to be part of the rat race.

There are those to whom the sacrifices it takes to make it work in CA are not worth the benefits.

Believe it or not, some people don't think California is all that great. Just like there are people who don't think Texas is worth a fuck, and on and on for every state and region in the country.

Good for you buying your home 4 years ago and leveraging yoru equity to buy another. And I mean this sincerely. I'm glad when people make good. I'm glad when people use their money to make money. (Personal finance and investing is one of my interests.) But I also recognize the fact that if you hadn't bought your first home 4 years ago you wouldn't have had the equity to leverage into the next one. And that would put you in a position of buying the first one for at least 50% more than you paid for it 4 years ago. It's alot harder to do. I doubt your salary has gone up 50% in the last 4 years to offset the rise in home prices. And a 50% rise in home prices is being VERY conservative. As you can see with the Greenfield example, the homes there have more than doubled in that period.

I suppose I was too blunt in my questioning. I didn't intend for you to give your personal financial history out on the 'net. You could have easily told me it was none of my business. After the bout of name-calling you had in this thread, I wouldn't think giving that as an answer would have been difficult for you.

And as for the Greenfield situation, I only knew about it because I was looking to buy in Greenfield recently. I live in Gustine and commute about 76 miles each way to my job in Salinas. Greenfield would be a much easier life for me, but I too was shocked to see what houses were going for there these days...

I never assumed you were a full time tattooer. In fact, I thought it was pretty obvious that it's a part-time gig for you. I was just trying to illustrate that that in most parts of the country an engineer doesn't have to work any kind of part time job. Even if it's just to support his car habit. I admire a man with hustle. It's obvious that you have that.

Of course, the 33 million people here WANT to be here. That's been my point all along. For some people (at least 33 million) the sacrifices are worth it. There are plenty of people who just couldn't imagine living anywhere else. For those people California is great. But someone who is thinking about moving here now, should know what to expect when they get here.

For the record, I never assumed the laws of supply and demand didn't apply in California. If you'll actually read my previous posts, you'll see that in one of them I spent a fair amount of time discussing just that.

I suppose I could now decide that I've wasted my time discussing the pro's and con's of living in California with someone who has already made up his mind that it's heaven on earth and any sacrifice is justified to live here... But I'm not gonna. While I think some of your opinions on what it actually costs to live here and how the wages compare to other parts of the country, I don't think you're wrong to want to live here. But why do I, or anyone else on the board have to be wrong to NOT want to live here???

  16. Acording to Neal Cavuto the real estate sky rocket is due to the enormous amount of foriegners that have been coming into our country since George W took office. Neal is a Rep. so its not propoganda more foriegners have moved here than all the Baby boomers combined. He estimated 40 million over the last 4 years he also estimated that over 25% OF THE US REAL ESTATE IS OWNED BY NON AMERICANS. 5% IS OWNED BY SAUDI ARABIA .This is not ment to bring politics to the hamb it is ment to bring a reason for the enormous prices for california real esate. Cali has the best foriegn aid programs to help foriegners to start bussinesses hence so many here and a lack of housing due to these facts

of course a lot of foreigners come here to the land of opportunity and work their asses off to buy a piece of the pie....2 jobs and looong hours for years....2 families in one small rental ...things a lot of americans won't do to buy their "dream"
I like California...it has allowed me to earn more money in real estate than I ever could have by slaving away for the man...unfortunately I had to spend a damn lot of it just to live here!!!!

I agree 100% with Detonator. I moved to San Diego with my girl for school. I miss Santa Cruz more and more every day. If I could just bring my whole life from here back up there I would do it. When you grow up there and then move to a place that costs just as much you get used to paying high prices for everything. But I wouldnt trade it for anything. But then again It is my home. I am biased

Hon...In this day and age of easy information gathering, an opinion can be made even without actually experiencing something. I won't be trying a commercial space flight, but someone that already has, feels it's perfectly safe.
We are just discussing mainly things that are easy to research...housing, jobs, cost of living etc....and these have facts about them. No one is telling you to leave CA...just that someone moving there has some things to think about. We all make decisions on our own personal priorities...just like you have done. Not right or wrong, just your own personal decisions. It's great to love CA, if that's where you want to be....but if you were asking me about a move to michigan, I would tell you the pros and also the cons of living here....just like the pros and cons of california. I have never lived south of eight mile road in Detroit...I visit there for motorcycle swap meets and I can assure you.....it's dangerous....don't move there....this is a fact....not an opinion. So, don't take offense to facts about your home state. You don't need to defend it, you like it there despite the negative aspects...which ALL places have. I have lived in a tent in the arizona desert, and lived on the local economy in third world nations, and also lived in Hawaii...all these places have good and bad about them. But when it came time to raise my family, I chose this place and I am happy with that decision and don't care what people think about it...just like you shouldn't care about what people think of your home. But be realistic...nothing is perfect.

Wow,I didn't know Caifonia was so universally hated,I thought it was just me. I left the bay area 10 years ago and haven't missed a day,OK I miss the car scene and the ocean, but thats it. My wife and I were thinking about a family and just couldn't do that out there.I had friend who taught 4th grade, they were taking guns and knives from these kids.My six year old has a rifle but knows I'd kick her ass if she ever misused it,but out there you got kids packing and using, just too damn scary.Beside what everyone else says is reason enough. My mother in law moved out here from Manteca, made enough from her house out there to buy a nice place on 2 acres of land and the place she sold was only half paid for. If it wasn't for the millions of people the Bay area would be a paradise.Good luck what ever you decide.

Ok the prices are high , but the interest rates have never been lower. Let'd talk profit. You can make $50,000 a year on increased property values. Keep your other place move down for a few years and go for the ride. My company centralized here 3 years ago and the new people screamed about the high cost until they realized the houses they had bought have gone up $250,000 in those 3 years. I don't hear any complaining now. Bigger investment bigger return. Also Norcal is a great place to live, Beaches in one hour, Snow skiing in 2.5 hours, mountains, rivers and lakes for days and if you like a big city with lot's of entertainment you have San Francisco and San Jose. You won't get acres in Silicon Valley unless your wife is a VP or something because the land is way to valuable.
    Good Luck with your choice

You really think that real estate will just keep going up and up and up??? It is due for a correction...probably in the 20% range...so your 700K house should drop by ohhh say 140K Personally I like to buy looow and sell high. I just don't think it's a great time to invest here.

I cant speak for the “GERM tm” but I think I can relate were he comein from.
I’m sick and fuckin tired of people putting down Ca.

    Land of fruits and nuts
    Over populated
    Over priced
    Bad traffic
    Arrogent people there
    Nice weather but so what
    Bunch of whacked liberals
    School system sucks

It seems like every time somebody brings up Ca on here, there’s a bunch of jack offs ready to piss all over us out here. I don’t ever here such hard core fuckered up comments on other states. Do you take any pride in were you live? Didn’t your mommy’s and daddy’s teach you any manners when you were little boys.

Me and my wife and 4 kids live in a 2000 ft 18 year old home. Appraised at $375000 last year.
On a 1/3 acre with 3 car garage with r/v access
    We make about $60.000
    Schools are out standing
Very low crime. Come on by look at the keys in my car
Lots of jobs. I just got a new one, 10 min. from home, without even trying, I was just applying for shit on line.
We do very fucking well thank you.

Talk all the shit you want but we know your just bitter and jealous.
    More jobs here
    Lots of open space/ land
    Better weather
    More car shows
    More swap meets
    Better destinations
    More money to be made
    More prophet on your investment

Yes im proud to live here and if you put it down im going to get in your face. Think about it wouldn’t you?

YOU tell me where I BASHED Ca. Other than saying that its overpopulated and overpriced.Which is the TRUTH.Maybe not ALL areas.BUT MOST. I never said anything that wasnt true.I WAS born and raised there.I lived there for 30 YEARS.I think I know what Im talking about.Compared to ALL OTHER states.Ca. IS overpriced...Dont try to tell me that it is'nt.$375.00 for an 18 year old,2000sq ft. on a 1/3 acre?Thats damn overpriced if you ask me.Im in the process of buying a 2600sq ft. home.built in 1998 on 5...yes 5 acres.the price for this ....$186.900 [IMG] I think it was Maynard that said it best...........LEARN TO SWIM!

  30. I gotta say one more thing which is a pro for Cali... while some have said teachers are leaving the state, Cali is still one of the best ranked states for school in the country...don't know if it still is but a couple-few years ago Cali and NY were the highest...so schools aren't necessarily bad. And 296...I think you have some weight to what you said but wow, calm down man. This shit isn't worth getting pissed over, I mean really... You can say whatever you want about my state...most peoples for that matter....its like a "your mother is..." joke...gese. I mean no ill will toward you by saying this but maybe the way you are acting and defending over this is one of those "Cali attitude" things that people have spoke of in previous posts in this thread?...why let people striking their keyboards get a rise out of you so they can get a good chuckle?....I'm done...don't care what state, it's all AMERICA...
