Fastsporty just called and was driving towards downtown LA from Santa Monica and couldn't even see any of the big buildings. That's ****ed up.
The county of San Diego is virtually shut down today, all county and city offices, banks, etc. are closed. Most businesses are closed with the exception of some of the groceries and a few fast food places. Ash is falling like snow flurries, hard to breathe when you're outside so most folks are staying inside and keeping the windows closed. Here's another pic of the sun taken just a few minutes ago, 9:45 PST...you can't see it in the pic but standing here looking directly at the sun (yes, it's possible to look directly at the full sun through this smoke) you can actually see the spots on the sun. This is some weird stuff. Looks like the worst of the fires may be over for our area, just waiting for the smoke to clear, they say it may take days...
Hope Everyone and their families are ok, we got everyone in my family out of Dehesa and Alpine, the fire has burned up to my buddy's house and it's getting close to my folks' but no one I know has lost their place yet. I couldn't go to work and my friends that did go have all been sent home. Keeping my fingers crossed, praying for everyones safety. Later Harrell
Every time I see some senseless idiot toss a burning cigarette out of a car window I think about things like this. We have had some pretty bad fires in Utah this year, mostly man caused, but nothing like what you guys are going through. Next time you see someone throw a **** out the window give him hell. That's why we have ash trays.
Well, I got up and cleaned the pool today. Theres a fire about 3/4 miles away and it will be here again soon. I didn't go to work in fear of them closing down my only way in or out so I will sit and wait. Thanks for the concern.......

[/ QUOTE ] heh, whenever i go to downtown LA they look like m***ive dark gray shapes due to the smog... you know its bad when you cant even see them
If anyone needs to move cars out of endangered areas, PM me, I have a huge amount of unused street parking in a pretty good area, and if needed, may be able to find something gated... In Long Beach... Mike
You guys all ROCK! Reading about all the offers of help to each other is way cool. I feel lots of warm fusszy around this place today. I'm proud to know you guys.
yeah... words can't describe how strange things are around here right now. that picture charlie shared from yesterday pretty much sums it up. i couldn't believe what i woke to yesterday. choking smoke, ashes everywhere, the sky was insane. i thought someone had dropped the bomb. it's bright red everywhere. i'm in the mission bay area, so we're safe. few people are out and about. ...i think i'm the only one i know working today. if any of you north or east county people or your families need a place to stay, all you have to do is ask - my doors are open. -- raaf
[ QUOTE ] ****s... [/ QUOTE ] Ya see that thickest part of the smoke at the coastline in the middle? That's Long Beach. I'm just glad (would do the "thank god" thing if I believed in such a concept) we aren't in the part making the smoke. I haven't breathed so much smoke since the riots a decade or so ago. Yesterday the smoe kept the shut up house cool, sheltered from the sun. Today I watched the thermometer move like a minute hand, from 62º to 82º just while I was eating breakfast... Anyone hear from DRD57? He lives up there where it's burning too.
[ QUOTE ] was driving towards downtown LA from Santa Monica and couldn't even see any of the big buildings. [/ QUOTE ] What's unusual about that? Seriously, take care out there. I spent about 1/2 my life in So-Cal. We're used to big fires around here, but it's kinda new for you guys in the mudslide belt...
Amazing pic from space- what website is that available on? Am watching news footage right now of San Diego county, just unbelievable. Some hunters, apparently, started a campfire that went out of control. To say the least.
Does anyone SoCal or ex-So Cal'ers remember the big Duarte/Azusa fire of '81 or '82? When I was real little, we lived right up against Fish Canyon, where the foothills caught blaze so completely one night I couldn't even look at it, but definitely feel the heat on my face. Just got me thinking about it. I'm praying for all of you affected by it, right now.
Hope none of your weed went up due to any stray embers. Like the smart guy I am, I rode my Pan to work in Orange County from Riverside on Friday. My eyes are still jacked. Seriously, though, I'd really like to understand the motivation behind arson like this. To lose everything you've ever worked for is one thing, it;s unforseen devastation. But to sit back, watching the television, knowing that "you" are responsible for that...you're right up there with Starkweather, Dahmer, et al in my book.
all you sc guys/gals; our thoughts and prayers are with you as you are dealing with this tragedy. if there's anything we can do from back here (midwest) please speak up.
Here is just a small shot of what I watched all day, I think theres 3 or 4 fires on this mountain range north of simi valley and all down the west end of the santa clarita valley. "this ****s" would be very understated, I myself didnt relize how serious it was until I saw 60 foot flames on that hill, and still I worked all day and couldnt do anything to help.
Just got news five pumper trucks from Utah are headed to the fire in California. Every little bit helps. God Bless you all. Our prayers are with you. I'm proud of our guys for what they are about to encounter.

[/ QUOTE ] I wholeheartedly agree... cruising around Eureka tonight listening to KFI-AM, and the reports 'n updates, I was reminded of a study citing positive ions (cue Prof. Frink voice.. "a-hey! Flaven!") in the Santa Anas really bringing out the worst in people. No ****. I know that's an understatement, but studies have shown crime waves and arsons spike up when the Santa Anas blow into town. It doesn't make it right. Just trying to make sense of any of it, if that's possible. And since hearing about fires sparking up in Lake Arrowhead, where my bro and his wife live, it doesn't make things easier. At least there at her mom's place in Corona. Don't know where is safe, down there, right now.
well i got 5 min of juice left in the laptop so im typing thi fast. we havnt had power since last night and they are talking about maybe a week without it,,, it got real close, maybe 1/2 mile they seem to have gotten it under control though, sorry i havnt returned the pm;s i just wanted to type this before the computer went dead. wes
charlie and all the Cali kids, our prayers are with you folks!like 3duece said we just went thru the same thing about a month ago in BC,Canada.we feel your pain. the Reverand
I heard on the news today that we sent down 4 or 5 of our water bombers, and a whack of our fire retardant gel. Those planes got way to many miles on 'em, for all the wrong reasons. Good luck to you all, and God Speed to the bombers. I hope they can save at least one set of dreams for somebody. - Tyson
The air support that has been showing up down here has really helped. The fire jumped across highway 8 last evening (the major east-west freeway into San Diego) but as soon as it did the air tanker came in and knocked it down. That's the kind of support we needed but couldn't get becuase most of these planes were farther north at the San Bernadino fires. I guess this fire fighting equipment is like the snowplows back east, you only need it once in awhile but when you do you wish you had ten times as much equipment. I'm leaving on a trip to DC today, I think that the airport will be open for all regular flights. Fires are mostly burning in areas away from where I live now. Many folks have had to leave their homes to stay with friends only to find that their friends had to evacuate as well. Someone on the TV said the other day that the area that has burned in and around San Diego is the size of the city of Chicago, over 250 thousand acres. Thanks to everyone for their good thoughts and prayers, the people of San Diego are really pulling together to support one another. No craziness with looters or other civil disobedience, people just want it to be over...
well, the power popped on this morning. glad to see that. How long can u sit in the dark reading old magazines with a flashlight for? seems like they got it under control here. If anyone needs any help shoot me a call. heres another pic from my front yard sunday night, wes
My wifes parents are in El Cajon and were packed and ready to evac last night..there on a hill top and theres nowhere to go and all trees and schrubs.....If the house burns they might try and come live with us????? UGGGGG no way baby..her moms a cat lady...she has 9 right now..try and evac 9 cats and a crazy lady.....I feel sorry for my father inlaw good luck everyone out there your all in our thoughts
thats the craziest part about this, sunday night when i was just waiting to get outta here i realized there was no where to go. the fire was everywhere and all the freeways were closed! wes
Best of luck to you all, I would wish for some rain for ya but I know the likley hood of that happening is pretty scarce. They had a Satalite pic of So-Cal and a bunch of the pacific ocean in our paper today, puts a different view on it. I guess we are pretty lucky we don't get a lot of this here just the smoke and ash from Aussie in bad years (2000km away).
think about when the fires are out ....next it is gonna be mud slides because all the vegitation has been burned away.i cant believe how creepy it is outside right now.this strange glow in the sky with ash and smoke...stay safe eveyone...and please if they tell you to go...go too many people have died by staying until it was too late.........
The wind seems to have shifted and now the wall of rire is moving toward the mountains. They are evacuating Julian and the surronding towns. The air everywhere is hard to breathe, but it is cooling down here on the coast. I'm praying for us all and for a quick end to all this. BTW the newspaper says the fire was probably started by a "hunter" from Covina who got seperated from his buddy and set a fire to call for help. He was given a citation and released. When questioned he dummied up. News says weather will change soon, possible sprinkles, hope they mean water sprinkles instead of the ash sprinkles we have now. Lets all get together at Cl***ic Malt Shop Fri nite.
