East Tenn Hambers HELP!!!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by stan55, Feb 16, 2010.

  1. I am looking for a shop that can turn down the edge of my Buick finned drums. I went to several places in the Morristown area and had no luck. Anyplace from Knoxville to Tri-Cities will work. Let me know the contact info if you have it and the cost if you had it done. I really want to find a shop that has done this before. Thanks guys.

Just curious, what do you mean by turning the edge down?
I know your talking about a lathe cut but where are you cutting?

  3. Cutting down the steel liner to clear the backing plate when used on Ford spindles

  4. C'mon guys, certainly someone here has had this done.

  5. Bump for the day guys. Sure could use an answer. Thanks

Call Hodge's Machine Co. in Johnson City, TN. Their phone number is 423-282-6931. They've been in business since "dirt was new and rocks were still soft". They may or may not have done this type of job, but I'm certain that they can handle it. We were installing a set of '56 Lincoln rim centers in a pair of modern space saver spare outter rims in order to have matching big and little wheels on my son-in-law's Model A. The Lincoln center was smaller than the corresponding opening in the space saver wheel. They rolled a piece of metal, welded it to the Lincoln centers, and the machined the modified center to fit in the narrow space saver rim. The wheels are GREAT. They run true and everything was centered correctly. If they can do this job, I'm certain that they can handle taking the edge off the brake drums.

  7. Sounds like that could be done on a brake drum lathe with some thought ,,,,

  8. 4ever18, Thank you for the answer. I will give them a try.

Scrapiron: I took it to a guy with 4 brake lathes and he balked at the job.

You're welcome, sir. I was very pleased with the gentlemen at Hodge's. Best regards.

  10. 4ever18, Sir thank you so much. Don at Hodges Maching shop is the greatest. I called last week and discussed the job with him and told him that I would not be up the next day and it was a 60 mile trip for me. Today I drove up and introduced myself, and gave him the drums. Before I could finish he had one mounted in the lathe and was lining it up and getting ready to cut it. I asked if he was going to do it while I waited and he had remembered the 60 mile trip and said yes, he would get them done in about an hour. Great guy and great place.

Anybody in this area that needs machining could not go wrong visiting his shop. He has a can do attitude. Thanks again for the recommendation.

stan55, you're very welcome. That "can do" attitude was a VERY welcome surprise for me, as well. That's why I was very glad to be able to recommend this shop. I, like you, have experienced other shops that act like you're asking them for a kidney - just because it's something that they don't do on a regular basis. I'm glad that it worked out well for you, sir.
