I'm trying to find out if the leaf springs on a 55 chevy are the same as on the 55 pontiac. Was search for some info on this but was coming up blank. Any help would be appreciated.
not likely, the entire frame, suspension, rearend, and floor are very different. The only parts that are the same are the roof, gl***, doors, and such.
An American built Pontiac will not have the same springs.I,ll verify that later using a Hollander if nobody else does it in the mean time.
Definitely not!Even Pontiac uses a couple different spring lengths in the same years.I bought a set of rear springs from a friend of mine for a 56(I took them out)and it had the 124"wheelbase instead of the 122" mine had.the springs were about 4 inches longer. If anyone needs a good set of rear springs,I still have them kicking around the shop.
Thanks any help would be appreciated. Maybe there is a cross reference with another leaf pack that would work. Just trying to not spend 6 bills on a new set. Safariknut is right there are two different wheel bases 1 being the starcheif at 124" and the cheiftian at 122". I also have a cheiftian.
So....here is what my Hollander says. While the 55-57 Chevy springs are 2 x 26 x 32 there is a note saying that wrecking yards report that the Pontiac springs from 51-56 will fit although they measure 2 x 26 3/4 x 31 1/4.There appears to be a slight difference in the bushings also. The eye opening may need to be enlarged depending on what bushings were being used. The wheels will change slightly in the opening. It says that the STAR CHIEF springs will not fit. Hope this helps!
Thanks Ratmotor. It seems like both the Pontiac and the Chevy springs are the same overall length of 58" but the Chevy locate the rear end 3/4 forward. I'll keep investigating before I buy anything. Thanks again.
Have you looked at Buick or Oldsmobile? Altho they are probably just as expensive as Pontiac. I'm having mine rebuilt...........I HOPE, otherwise, I'll be paying big money to not look like a dog dragging its *** on the floor.
