Doing a mustang 2 on my GMC with my stock steering column. Anybody got the bearing part number for this. My local bearing guy says they don't make a flanged bearing that size - 1.5" OD - 3/4" ID. Here's the link to the bearing at Cl***ic Parts. It does say bearing and bearing adapter so... I can't see spending $40 plus for a $10 bearing. There's a few pics of the lower bearing on a stock steering column in this post about half way down. Thanks guys.
Try Tractor Supply Company - I found a bearing to use in a column I modified. I don't recall seeing a flanged bearing there, however.
try this!http://www.mcmaster.com/#6384k367/=5w22nx take your column tube to the muffler shop and have them expand to fit bearing or have piece of larger dia. tube added! good luck and post your results!
I bought one at osh for 10 bux.It fit a little loose but if you slice the tube both ways and weld it it will shrink to fit.they have them in thier specialty isle with all the pull out drawers with special clips and bushing and such.the inner was 7/8 exactly.
Check this post: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=317173 The conveyor bearing used in that post should be pretty darn close to what you need. Tim D.
Thanks for all the replies. I think I'm going to try the larger bearing and expand the column tube with an expander. The column is a little long so if I screw it up I can cut it off a couple of inches. I just found it hard to believe that they didn't have one that was 1.5" OD.
i had to fix mine that somebody took a torch to years ago, i used some tube and a self lubracating bronze bushing. works great and only cost a few bucks.
I needed a bearing for my column that was 1 3/8 on the outside and 3/4 on the inside. I looked through all the bearing books and came up empty. I finally found a flanged, sealed bearing in the strangest of places. It is a wheel bearing for a John Deere riding lawn mower. Maybe something similar will work for you.
Used a 3/4" ID flanged bearing and turned a "doughnut" to fill the gap. Doughnut is TIG welded to the outside tube and the bearing presses in.
OK, I got it done... I ordered the bearing from McMaster-Carr part number 6384K367. This is the one 55 Dude recommended. It was about $10 or $12 with shipping. I cut the steering column tube to length and used an exhaust tubing expander and using a grinding wheel in my die grinder ground out the inside until the bearing fit. Then I cut the steering shaft to length, ground a double d and a notch for the bolt in the steering joint and there you go. The steering wheel holds it all together. All in all, it worked out well.
I got mine at Orchard Supply Hardware. They are a flanged type bearing that is used in the solid steel wheels used on hand trucks, etc...worked like a charm!
