Wait a minute, isn't this where somebody chimes in and says Speedway's 97 parts are cheap Chinese ****? I've purchased some genuine 97 stuff from SoCal in Phoenix and the Hot Rod Shop and consider that I'm getting good value for my money.

What's with all the *****fests about hot rodding costing too much lately? Yeah it's expensive! If it were a cheap and easy hobby, everyone would do it! Go get some legos or sew up a quilt or something...

Are they? I don't have anything to really judge against I guess... I will say that they do what they say the do... I've had so much good luck with their stuff and that's important for hack like myself.

    Utter ********.
They undertook the complete remanufacture of a piece of 1930s technology, made it better and then marketed it to the world at great personal expense. You think they should've done it for nothing? The only venting on this thread should be about how much of a dumb topic for a thread this is.

I reckon you should ditch those 'expensive' Strombergs and go fit a Holley instead.

******** have udders? Seems to be a bit of a contradiction there!

And you can't get milk from a cow's head, cause it comes from the udder end.
    (vet joke, sorry).

But, I agree. I think a legitimate remanufacture and updating of a limited run product that does what it is supposed to do may be costly, but it won't be expensive.

Quality costs and when it is a comparative low quan***y the price ends up being a tad more than high volume stuff.

Few are as cheap as I am. Where at all possible, I stay away from Chinese replacement parts.

    I'm not that cheap.

Expensive? Compared to what? A loaf of bread? When I was a kid, mom gave me a dime and sent me three blocks to the store for a loaf of bread. I came home with a full sized loaf and a penny change. ( yes, I am really that old). Today I bought a loaf of bread for 2.48 and it has come down. Things go up. Pay up or give up.

But, I do think you'd qualify for ********. Maybe even udders, if you'd buy them dinner first. :) But not at the same time, please.

    Basically, you have two choices.....
One is to save for three months to have enough money to purchase that first-cl*** item you want. And then you enjoy it for a long time.
The other choice is to buy something cheaper right away. And then spend those three months, or more, *****ing about what a piece of **** it is.
    Take your pick.

I don't want to sound like I'm *****ing. And I certainly would never buy cheap Chinese trash. I just spent a grand restoring 6 carbs, is all. Expensive, but well worth it. I am comparing this not to a loaf of bread, but to restoring other carbs, like the aforementioned Holley. Again, I'm not *****ing, I was just a little surprised at the bill.

No question that that is a pile of money, but, did you get an estimate before the work was done?

Well yeah, I saw the price before I paid for the parts. It's just the nature of the beast. You have a carb with a ton of stainless on it, not to mention the fact that they aren't m*** produced to the level of carbs like Edelbrock and Holley. I understand all of this. It's just hard to deny that these things make them more expensive. That's all I was trying to get at :D

It's just unfortunate that we all couldn't be ignorant and have duller tastes and be into things like Toyotas, where you can trade a pack of cigarettes for a carburetor.
Our niche however, dictates that we pay more for the finer things in life. That we spend a thousand dollars to have shiny stainless accelerator pump rods, and levers. I couldn't ask for anything more, but it's humorous at the same time how this love of ours can be absurd sometimes, and I was merely trying to point out the absurdity in paying the kind of money necessary for something that really isn't necessary, at all. Especially when 4 of the carbs are dummies. Of course, to me I would never settle for anything less.

Sorry that I caused such a ruckus.
