I had planned on using one of my Lasalle 3 speed trannies behind the Cadillac Flathead. Now I'm thinking I would be better off with a 5 speed. The Lasalle ****** has what looks to be a rather long shaft. Has anyone done this? Any suggestion as to which ****** to use with a modified stock bellhousing?
Ha, I don't know snot, but here's what I think . . . Any T-5 should hold the flathead power. A "WC" (world cl***) would be best. I "think" the ford use a long input shaft. Hopefully someone will chime in for you. Wish you the best, it'll be a great ride!
I'd say that a T5 would probably be the best bet. They are available, have several available ge****ts, and are strong enough for a flathead-powered car (even a Cad). The weight of your car might be an issue, but I doubt that you'll have problems unless you deliberately try to break the transmission. Not sure about the adaptation issues, but Flat Ernie's thread on T5s probably has some of the data you need. I would guess that a WC transmission from a V8 Mustang (3.35 low gear) is worth considering. I think its gear spreads would be a good match to the torque curve of your flathead, and has the bonus of being available and widely supported by the factory and aftermarket. You have a very interesting project going; inspirational and creative. Please keep us updated.
Try Bendtsen's Transmission Adapters http://www.transmissionadapters.com Cadillac to Chev Auto or Manual 346 Flathead* $ 795.00 Then you find yourself a T-5 from a Camaro!
I'll look into the T5. I'm a little leary of the adapter, as I've only heard negative feedback about them. Has anyone used one with good results?
I sent them an email, but I'm not sure about that setup- look closely at the second pic. It appears with their adapter, that you keep the stock flywheel, then add a SECOND flywheel behind the first. I'm not thrilled by that prospect.
