Plan on spending a day at Hearst castle though; unless you don't mind blitzing through it. Highway 1 is absolutely gorgeous. Take your time and pull over at the Vista Points. Absolutely stunning. I make the run up from LA to Big Sur a few times a year, and take the 1 as much as I can.

Go to Grover Beach and drive on the beach - not many places you can do that anymore!

  3. Stop at Point Lobos park. It doesn't look like much until you get inside. It will be near the start of your journey. Some of the best coastline I have seen.

NEPENTHE ??? Really??? great view is correct... You can also get a $25.00 hamburger...Overpriced. There are other cool spots along the drive to stop that have great views without the price gouging.. Jason.

Out of the way, but Yosemite is the ultimate "half pipe". :D EVERYONE should see Yosemite.

But on Hwy 1, Monterey, Pacific Grove and Carmel are awesome and Clint Eastwood's restaurant is great, with reasonable prices. We usually stay at Ragged Point near San Simeon (Hearst Castle) which is awesome. In Santa Barbara, we like the Pacific Crest Motel which is a short walk from the water.

In 2006, we rented a Hemi Charger for the drive from LA to SF and I was impressed with the car, 22mpg wasn't bad either. The NHRA Museum in Pomona is a must, and Bob's Big Boy in Burbank is okay on a Friday nite. We had intended to go to the March Meet at Bakersfield, but it got rained out, the only time since 1959... just our luck.

In SF, we did our own Bullitt Tour, retracing the scenes in the movie. At the top of the hill on York St where Steve McQueen becomes the pursuer, there was a hotrodder with lots of *****in rods and friends with rods. A lot of the locations in the movie still look the same. Get the scoop at http://www.ponysite.de/bullitt.htm

On our next trip, I wanna do a garage crawl, so I appreciate the hints here in this thread. BTW, does anyone know to get invited to tour Jay Leno's garage?

The coast is a beautiful drive because of the desolation.
You have the Pacific Ocean on one side and a nearly shear mountain range on the other.
Sometimes you don't se another person or car for miles.

    A word of caution.

There are some turn outs along there near Big Sur with side roads that go down the cliffs a ways.
It's pretty and serene and great for taking pictures, but, sometimes there may be a hobo camp down those side roads.
I and Wife ran into one once accidentally and luckily ran out of it faster than they could.
If you aren't a hobo, or the local sheriff or CHP, you don't want to be anywhere near a hobo camp.
It's OK, just stay aware of your surroundings and who may be surrounding you.

Ditto on the Santa Cruz boardwalk, very "old-timey." Grab a br*** ring on the Carousel and ride the coaster.

Here's a couple of shots of hwy 1 south of Carmel . I'd also recommend Jockos' in Nipomo CA, for a great steak. Nothin fancy ,just good food and drink ! If you find yourself staying in San Luis Obispo, you might try staying at the Peach Tree Inn , Some very nice owners . Have a great trip !!

That's my favorite drive.........in the world. You can spend a week doing it and not take it all in! Megan's (ChevyGirlRox) thread is a perfect guide to follow too. Here's a few of my memories...........

CA State Hwy 1 is one of the great drives in the world (trust me, I do a lot of travel). Definitely check out Solvang, the wineries (so says the teatotaller), and drop into Anderson's Soup (***uming it's stlll around) for a bowl of split pea soup).
