    OTHER JUDGED AWARDS

CUSTOM d’ELEGANCE: $3,000.00, Trophy and Leather Jacket and winner named on the Historic Perpetual Plaque.

This award created in 1953 known originally as the Car of Elegance was first won by Sacramento’s own Joe Bailon. This restored award will be open to all customs built from 1936-1964 that feature a silhouette change including Chopped, Channeled and/or Sectioned. 1935 thru 1948 Vehicles outward appearance must be in the true spirit of a classic custom. (Judges will give consideration to the intent of the vehicle). The Custom d’Elegance is a special class with awards for Display, Engineering, Paint, Engine, Interior, and Detail. All entrants will receive a class participation award and therefore are not eligible for other Custom Category class awards. Vehicles are eligible for other Sacramento Autorama pick awards. All entries must be able to start under their own power and move forwards and backwards. All entries will be displayed in 20x20’s. All contenders must bring their own display. (Photos required). The overall winner is determined by a point system from the judging staff.

    AGAIN JUST A QUESTION????

The Sacramento Autorama likes to bill itself as "home of the customs" yet they disrespect what a custom is by continually giving the biggest custom awards out to street rods, or pretty much anything other than an actual custom.
It is a yearly slap in the face to people who really dig customs. Especially at a show that really does draw in some pretty damn nice customs.

This car epitomizes all the reasons I left street rods behind! looks like some new kind of candy treat I would not let my kid eat rot her teeth out.

  11. Looks like they maybe sectioned it an inch...but I'm probably just reaching.

The rules as quoted require a silhouette change and only suggest how that is achieved. The word 'must' occurs in the sentence that says 'spirit of a classic custom'.

I think its up to the judges and sponsors to decide exactly what that means. Its up to me to decide if I'll enter or attend the show. So far I've never decided to do either.

I find the two different year ranges confusing. '36 to '64 and '35 to '48. If one where fully included in the other it might mean only that subset, but since the two are not fully overlapping its hard to be sure how a '35 fits.

SHINEY! But don't even come close to meeting the criteria of the award! And whats up with those "tuner" wheels and tubbed rear? Is it on a C4-5 suspension?

If that's John Buck's idea of a custom, why does anyone bother to enter anymore?

X2... I completely agree with you. This is a street rod and by no means a custom. Well just look at the AMBR. Same thing.

  21. Seems to me it might be time for a HAMB Kustom award like at the roadster show as this same issue came up last year and the year before and..... well you get the idea.

Regardless of the whining, this might be a key factor in the award...

"All entries will be displayed in 20x20’s."

I saw a lot of cool customs that did not fit the category.

And also I suspect, as has somewhat always been the case with "customs", I bet a lot of beautiful cars in the category did not have finely finished undercarriages or engine compartments. I suspect a lot of the nicer customs even showed their car with the hoods closed (as I think a custom looks best anyway...)

These shows are judged on every square inch of the car and style or execution seems to be secondary to fit, finish and number of changes overall. It is not likely that this will change too soon. Just the way it is at every indoor show...

Regardless, I assume those that went to the event had a good time anyway, as i would have.

I think the escape clause here is "silhouette change including Chopped, Channeled and/or Sectioned." it doesn't say it MUST be chopped, channeled and/or sectioned, only that a silhouette change needs to take place. Doesn't lowering change the silhouette? I am not say that I agree with it and I certainly wouldn't consider the car in question a custom. To me, a custom is something that has extensive body modifications.

I'm pretty sure I talked to the owner of that car at the Houston Autorama. I remember it had a whole list of body mods you can see the list on his display in that pic, not my style but a lot of work and a lot of money in that ride. I remember he gave me a number it was over 200

  25. The rules do not state that it MUST be chopped, channeled or sectioned, only that it must have a silhouette change which would included chopped, channeled, or sectioned. The roof line has definitely been changed on the winning car.

John Buck is the PROMOTER - he doesn't have to get it - he hires people to do the judging, categorizing etc. John has nothing to do with the vehicles entered or the judging. His job is to promote and put on the show. Like any good CEO he needs to surround himself with the people who "Get it". Most of that staff he "inherited" with the show and it is the same as it's always been. Now if those people aren't doing the job, then it's his job to replace them.

Remember, just like the AMBR, this award is not for the best "Traditional" car and therefore modern styles are definitely going to come into play.
Not saying I like the car that won, nor many of the recent AMBR's but they do fit the criteria of the way the rules are written and judged.

I talked to the owner of the 55 a couple weeks ago, I think he said they chopped the roof 1" out of the crown, not posts.
I haven't been to Sac in several years but it seems they use to lean heavily toward "traditional" customs for that award. Too bad it's not the same anymore.

I know I'm wrong, but it looks like a 54-56 Buick or Olds small car 2dht roof on that '55

Not my idea of "Custom" but I do not get involved in judging shows either.
I hear the Autorama was well attended this year and a pretty laid back event.
If the criteria to be Custom for this show is just not to be Stock, well, there ya go!

Sometimes it's more of a political thing going on behind the scenes. Someone knows someone that knows someone that worked on the car. There were far better cars to choose from.
