To my friends of the HAMB, I have a 1953 Chevy 150 Two Door Sedan. I am trying to replace my heater motor inside of my car. 1. I took off the housing with the 4 screws. 2. I took off the fan blade with the locktight screw that hold it to the shaft. Now I am stuck. I can't take out the radiator cound coil. I can't take out the shaft, so I can't take out the motor. Any sugestions? The old motor is shot- I am coverting it to a new 12 volt motor. Thank you for your help in advance. Bryan
been awhile...a lot of GM heaters come out through firewall or fenderwell - dunno about 1953-54 Ever consider buying a Motor's® Manual for that range of years? They're pretty good at covering almost everything. Or go online and find instructions at any of the early chev owner forums. dj
It is the round kind. It is mounted/welded on the firewall and there is a lever on the housing that can direct the air flow to the windows. I took off the housing and there is a round coil and the fan blade to circulate the air.
Could be seam sealer/dum-dum holding it fast to firewall. Clean around it and possible (gently) pry on it. Hang tight, more HAMB'rs will have 1st hand exp., I'm throwing a guess at you.
I'm pretty sure you need to remove the heater to remove the core. I don't have one here to look at since I'm at work. I'm fairly sure there are 2 long skinny bolts that go through the motor and pop out the back side of the heater, there are nuts back there to remove and the motor comes out that way. these bolts also hold the 2 halves of the motor together, so be careful. I've had a bunch of heaters over the years and found that the motors will usually work fine if you put some shrink tube over the wires where they go into the motor. the original cloth covered wire deteriorates and causes a short. 6 volts will run fine on 12... just a little fast
Dear Rat Fink, You are correct. I pulled off the housing, by removing four screws. That covered the round coil. I removed the fan blade- then I saw the two nuts you are talking about, I removed the nuts and pulled the motor bolts out of the holes. Now the motor is free from the coil and mount, but I cant remove the motor from behind the coil and the metal mound. The motor is "free" of all bolts ect. I just can't remove it from behind the mount. I am struggling. Thank you for your support. Bryan
Maybe the core needs to come out first. Besides the heater hoses what is holding the core in? Just a guess on my part as the earliest I can remember working on a heater core is probably early sixtys. I can sure remember the worst one though, 69 Mach 1. Double barrel MFer! Dennis
Friends of the HAMB! I got it out..... I had to take the nuts from the firewall engine side and the heater popped right out. Guess what? The core has a hole. Guess what? The core can't be repaired. Guess what? A new core is 375 bucks. I am in deeper than I though-- I was so proud of myself for removing the heater core-- now no one wants to touch it because it is so old and they can't repair it because the hole is in the middle of the honeycomb. Thanks for your support HAMB! You guys and gals are awesome. Thanks Bryan
