I just picked up a new car that supposedly has a newer crate motor in it. Not that I'm doubting what the seller told me, I would just like to know exactly what motor it is. I have the following numbers I pulled:

    Casting #: 3978010
    ID #: c7z204689

I haven't been able to find ANYTHING online, nor could my local GM dealer help me.

If anyone can help, THANK YOU!

I can't find it either, but...for future reference

    A block casting number of 3970010 is a common 4" bore (350, 327)

Double check the numbers, I bet you are misreading it...especially the last 3 digits of the other number. Typically that's got letters in it.

the only SURE way is with the paper work that came with the motor ,

If I buy a new motor as in a (crate) I would save or have the paper on it for reference later .....

The first number that you gave is a factory number for a 350 Chevy which is not really any help with your question !

It's a 1977 chevy truck 350 block, I guess you could call a rebuilt engine a "crate" motor, but most folks use that term for all new engines.

(he did not list the suffix, and C7Z in the partial VIN means a Chevy truck, 1977 vintage, vehicle ***embled at the Freemont plant)

also you missed a number on the casting number, that 8 is really a 0

  5. Real crate motors have a partial part number on their stamping pads.

My buddy had a few bare blocks from crate motors and it really stumped us what they were from with the odd stampings - until someone told us.

Squirrel, thanks! That sounds right. So, if the motor was an older truck motor that was taken into the dealer and rebuilt, would it be called a "crate motor"? I always thought that term was only for NEW from the factory motors.....

Even with the Chevy Truck VIN on the pad it still could be a "crate" motor. Seems everyone these days call their rebuilt engines a "crate motor". Guess it gives it a certain cred............ Blueprint Engines, Tri-Star, and tons of others do this. Bottom line, its a 350 small block Chevy. If the compression and oil pressure are good and it runs smooth, that's what counts. (Oh, and a ZZ4 for instance says ZZ4 on the pad) Edelbrock takes new GM short blocks and puts their stuff on them to be a "crate" engine so who knows that the pad says on one of those......

Hey BigMac! If your engine was a Blueprint Engine, you would have our serial number tag on the engine. Most of the time we put them on the driverside, back towards the bellhousing on a chrome and red tag that looks similar to a military dog tag. We also stamp ours under the intake as well. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions... hope that helps!

Reviving an old thread here.....I have a question, this small block I have has no partial vin on the pad, but these pad numbers "IM0307 6VP" designate a 260hp crate... would this be a flat tappet engine? Valve cover bolts are the old perimeter style
