Cleaning a transmission filter???

Best I can tell my '56 Pontiac's transmission filter is not available anywhere, but is supposedly able to be cleaned. Any suggestions on what to use or how to go about it?
The transmission is the "Strato-Flight Hydramatic" which I think is the same as an Olds Jetaway.

By a new ****** and give the old one to me???????

 

Is it a screen? If so take it off and spray with brake cleaner or wash in your solvent tank.
