NOW you tell me.... I already told the wife we could paint the kitchen this weekend.

Never been to Denny's garage, but I remember a trip to his and his brother's downtown store about 20 years ago. Filled with cool future projects.

Take pics, and see if they are going racing this year.

Wish I was a little closer I'd come. We used to hang out a bit with Jon Jamison there in town, (I actually bought his old flathead roadster a few years back) Him and Slaymaker were good friends so I got the whole tour over at his place one day. So much cool stuff. Seems like there was a guy there staying with him from Austrailia that was building a Mertranga Merc clone. What ever happened to that car. Gary

Jon did the machine work on the flatty 40 coupe I had. Never heard if Jon still has his duece coupe???? That place of I believe it was Slaymakers, the one with the Bonneville ??? I can't even remember now, was it a roadster or a coupe. Plus the other stuff he was working on.. One hell of a garage and shop though.

He eventually went back home, I think I remember him building either a Model A roadster or roadster pickup too??? I can't remember for sure but I'll ask Denny tomorrow. I don't think he has ever been back. This summer Jesse James was in town for the Clay County Fair and visited Denny's shop. They took some group pics together and had some fun.

Yup, I'm about 120 miles away and two hour drive. I'll be in a little purple Ranger pickup with a topper.

Jon still has his Deuce 5W with the blown flatty in it. He has come back to the car thing lately after a bout with antique tractor pulling (Jon was kicking **** on those guys with some horsepower). He recently restored a old drag car (famous but I forgot whose it was) and Denny did the lettering on it.

Denny and Jack have the Slaymaker Brothers "Rigor Mortis" blown flathead '34 Ford Coupe that holds the Blown Vintage Gas Compe***ion Coupe XF/BVGCC @152.494 record.

Dennis is still dragging stuff home all the time and it is more unbelieveable than ever! He picked up an old hot rod Deuce 5W a few months ago too.......

OK, since you asked nice......... here's the pics of the Old Iron Garage Tour in Spencer, IA last Saturday. I didn't see them all but these are the ones I got pics of.

This is Kelly Polson's shop. The old style Chevy coupe g***er is Kelly's and the other Chevy coupe, Model A sedan, and the Willy's sedan body with the blown Hemi ch***is belong to his friends.

Next was Paul Lair's shop which is right next to Denny's shop. It was built by the late Dave Bailey, who we lost a year ago after a long battle with cancer. Dave was a great hot rodder and we were glad to see Paul keep it in the "hot rod" family and restock it with his neat collection of cars, engines and cool stuff.

And finally here is Denny's shop and unbelieveable collection of cars, speed parts, midget racers, wheels, and cool stuff. And he has even more stashed around the country. His old yellow '34 coupe is like an old shoe, it fits and is comfortable and it is what you see him take on the road most often. He has more drivers but the "Xcelerate coupe" is his trademark.

  24. Ahh yes, always a reminder that Iowa has more folks/money and cool **** that our old west local out here. Not a slam against Denny, just a fact, that this area I live in is pretty thin. Thanks for the pics Jerry, very cool. I would be afraind my Firestone dirttrackers would go to **** before I used em all! Maybe Barry Lobeck is needing some to revisit his past?

Glad to see Chris Binder's old 58 Desoto ambulance is still kicking around Spencer. And he appears to take a lot of pride in it and has even repainted it. I had a chance to buy it from the town of Kamrar IA back in the 80s but did not have the cash.

There is a high percentage of gearheads in Spencer and a lot of other collections hiding around town.

One thing to remember is that Denny has been collecting cool stuff and doing this for over 50 years and he rarely sells what is near and dear to him. He is as real as they get and has been a pure "Hot Rodder" the whole time. He does it all - building, fabricating, painting, pinstriping, engine building, machine work. His brother Jack has an equally huge collection of cool stuff. And the best part is they are the nicest guys you will ever meet. I met Dennis fifteen years ago when I was getting back into cars after my motorcycle habit and he has been a good friend ever since. Here's a cool bottle of "AutoMoto" wine he found, pinstriped and gave to me when I retired! Check out the '40 Coupe at Bonneville on it! By the way, he's not doing Bonneville this year but is thinking about going out to El Mirage to check it out for a future run out there.

Watch the Old Iron Company's website for next years date. It is about the same time every year. I probably will be down in Arizona by next year so i don't know if I'll make it back for it.

Met Denny about 20 years ago. I have sold him several wheels during that time. Became buds over the years, I offer to buy the (ugly) wheels off of Yellar at least once a year. Been fun. Cal
