I've been going through hell lately with ***les so I thought I'd share some of what I've learned in Indiana. The people at the BMV don't really know how to handle this and each branch with give you different answers and criteria. I've got two cars without ***les but both have VIN's in place. I was supposed to get a bill of sale with both of them and of course they never showed up for either one. No problem. I had the police come out and inspect the car for a ***le history search. But the police don't have the forms they need (makes sense, they can't carry every form out there). I got the right forms for this from the BMV and had the police come back out. They inspected both cars and signed off on the forms. I submitted them to the BMV with $8. They came back right away with clear historys and no registered owners anywhere (the searches only go back so many years and include the surrounding states as well as your state. Cool, I have to cars with no leins or registered owners. I go to submit for a new ***le at the BMV but they tell me NO. I have to have a notorized bill of sale with an address of a previous owner who can PROVE ownership of that car. This means you can't just make up a bill of sale...I think. I also asked what would be involved if I said the car belonged to my grandparents who are deceased and the ***le was lost. Same thing. Need something notorized with proof of ownership or previous registration. Hard to get from dead people. I ask what happens if I say the car was abandoned on my property. They say it has to be called in to the abandoned vehicles department and will likely get picked up and auctioned off and then I might be able to get a ***le that way..if I win the auction. Finally today I asked how in the hell I can get a ***le for these things. The cars are perfectly legal, I'm legal, I WANT to give the state money and be legal. The answer..."I don't know". I finally get a manager and they tell me to take the information I have (***le history and police inspection) to the local courthouse and file a motion against the BMV for a hearing on a ***le application. I did. It costs $70 to file. If you can prove you rightfully own the car, reciept or something like that and that no one else owns it (***le history, police inspection) then the judge will most likely grant you an order for the BMV to issue a new ***le. So for a lot of h***le and $78, it looks like you can legally ***le your old ***leless car in Indiana. Thought this might help some folks.
Yeah, honestly, I didn't have to do this much to get married or have kids. The good news is that it does appear that you can ***le a car legally in Indiana for $78 and not worry about those ***le companies and all of the other stuff they are cracking down on. Hopefully this works in other states too. I had to finally get to a manager and explain..."I own this car legally, I want it to be legal, and I want to give you money to make it that way. Please help me."
Guys unclescooby...is right on the money with this. Just went thru it and other than going before the Judge(haven't done this since HS) went like clockwork. Printed his post and followed to the letter. Cost me $98.00 included ***le fee's. He is right about different branches doing it differnt. Sold a car to a friend in Shelbyville and walked him thru it.........other than the police check and Bmv report finished in 1 day....no court costs. Unclesscooby I hope to return the favor someday.
Trying to ***le my RPU, I have the receipt from the auction company I bought it from in Wisconsin saying "model a truck (no ***le)" and the amount. Had the sheriff stop by last night to do the VIN check and he tells me the frame number doesn't have enough digits and the motor and transmission numbers don't match. Does the whole court thing work if you only have matching numbers? Thanks, Pat
technicaly your truck doesn't have a VIN. so to him it looks wrong. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_identification_number you need to reasearch your year and model car to see what # it's supposed to have. that'll give you some ammunition with the cops and bmv. P.M. me for another suggestion. scotty t
