My daughter and two grand dauhters are on Oahu, she lives on the Marine base. Talked to her about 2hrs. ago and she said they are staying put as the Marine base where she is in a safe zone. She said that she was watching the ships being readed for going out to sea.

I visited Kuai shortly after a big one hit back in the 1980's. The damage to the end that took the hit was extreme. Good luck and hit the high ground.

A half-metre high wave just hit East Cape and other 1.5 metre high one, followed by a 1 metre wave went through the Chathams a little while ago.

We should be seeing something shortly in JAFA country...

Apparently, the one that hit in the East Cape of NZ only measured 8". Let's hope that this is as bad as anyone in the tsunami's path has to face.

The conditions sound similar to the one that hit Hilo in 1960. Head to the high grounds and be safe!

Just watching news showing live footage from Diamond Head. Says the tide has started to go out at Hilo and is expected to come back in fast and hard.
Hope everyone is safe. Thoughts and prayers are with you all.

A couple of years ago I was out surfing dawn patrol at a Maui N. shore location called Kanaha Towers, and saw a bunch of people down near the beach watching me, and nobody else came out to surf, although the waves were running 4-6 and super clean sets! What I didn't know was there was a big earthquake over on the big island and they were expecting a tsunami.....
So they were hanging around watching to see if it came while I was out surfing! I guess it did, and it was so minor, like one foot, that I didn't even notice it out where I was. That spot is a long paddle out to the outer reef where the best break is. Heck, I might even have surfed a tsunami wave and didn't even know it!

It looks like Lahaina would be protected by the island of Hawaii and the smaller island of Kaho olawe (sp?) but I'd be thinkin' of driving up in the hills behind Lahaina! Go on Google Earth and look at Chili, it shows where the original quake was and all the after shocks.

  11. I live in the only US town in the lower 48 states, to ever be wiped out by a Tsunami... the 1964 Alaska quake, generated a Tsunami that hit my little town, and took out the first 12 blocks....and I live about 500 feet from the Ocean, thankfully, it's about 85-90 feet up... but there's people all over the cliffs, every parking spot on the coast and high ground, is taken....we have a Tsunami warning siren that goes off every Tuesday (as a test) at 12 noon... haven't heard it today, but I'm ready to head for higher ground at a moment's notice.
The Coast Guard Helicopter is making p***es right over head, too...
Google "Crescent City, March, 1964" and you will see why I am not taking this too lightly...

Latest news here was they expected it to wrap around the south end of Hawaii and mostly affect the south and east shores of Maui. There's a huge slot there between Maui and Kahoolawe where that energy can come through. Kahoolawe's pretty small too, not too much protection there.

Looks like at the present Hilo is not seeing too much activity, some recession and advance of smaller surges, but the main activity has not come in yet.

We've been watching TV for the last couple of hours and so far it doesn't seem like anything to be too concerned about. I'm just glad I have never been facinated with living on the beach. Around her the Great Lakes can deal you a pretty good blow if your on the water. Lots of beach property gets blasted every year and wipes out a lot of real estate.
    Hope everyone keeps safe.

Folks, there was nothing, move along, nothing to see here. ABC Stores will re-open and the shelves are stocked with Corona and limes. time to get back to normal.

    It's over.

My mom is from Hawaii, her family lives mostly in Waipahu O'ahu and some on the other islands too. Hoping for the best, not sure what the outcome will be.

WOW - I hope all are okay in the islands and throughout the Pacific that's affected by these quakes and tsunamis. We are very lucky, we just got home to Michigan on Friday (26th) after a 2 week vacation & island hopper cruise around Hawaii. I wouldn't want to be one of the unfortunates who are having to deal with this situation, but am hoping that all is good with them.

They are saying nothing has happened, no big waves, there's really no drama except for the media hyping it all up.

All's well. There was some really strong tidal surges going on in Hilo Bay and in Lahaina, not the usual kind we get. I'm sure they'll show it on the news eventually. Better safe than sorry, because as you can imagine, most of the local and tourist population are centered around the beaches! Never can tell what Mother Nature is going to throw out there.

As it is right now, it looks like the major threat has p***ed.

looks like all will be okay on oahu. surges look pretty crazy but thats about it. Should be no property damage and no loss of life. People are actually going back to the beach..i dunno about that especially when they have children with them...kinda stupid but oh well. thanks everyone for your concern. prayers for everyone in Chile and everywhere else affected.

Earlier today, from my house, I could see all the boats at Maalaea Harbor pulling out to open water. Guess they didn't want to be inside when it hit. Probably the same at Lahaina Harbor. NOAA posted 3' surges at Kahului (mean sea level to surge height).

Well, the carnage that the media was hoping for, didn't materialize. The looks on the faces of the talking heads showed it all. They truly were disappointed.
