I know this has been vaguley covered before but I'm trying to set up my front suspension on my coupe and I know the style I'm going to use is the spring behind the axle, but I can't find any good closeup pictures of any suspension setups like I want. So I thought there ought to be a pic thread for people to find and look at, that has spring behind the axle mounted in the bones pics in it. I've found lots of pics of axles using four bar setups or hairpins like this but I want just pics of them setup in the bones. I have a stock 40 ford car front end I'm planning on using but I want to change the location of the spring and mount it behind the axle so I can get the car setting low like I want. I've done about a million searches and found few specific pics of this setup but I see show coverage of cars and alot of times there are cars with this setup on them in the pics. So I know they are out there but I can't find close up suspension pics. I have an idea of how to mount them but i'd like to see other peoples Ideas also. Especially cars that people are driving now would really help and any insight to how it rides and drives with this setup.
I'm NOT looking for pics of cars with hairpins like a t-bucket. I'm looking for ones with the spring mounted In the WISHBONES. suicide style or any other style just as long as the front spring is mounted in the wishbones.
I’m not sure on the welded perch bolts, perhaps a sleeve for the perch to bolt into.<o></o> The one that use a rap-a-round braket look ok. <o></o>
My truck runs a 40 Ford front end with the spring through the wishbones. Here are some pics. If you need better one's let me know and I will dig my camera out These were before I detailed the front end and straightened the tie bar. And after.
I just finished redoing my front end and took a boatload of in process/finished pics...here you go. If you would like some higher res pics that really show details, let me know and I can send along the original pics. These have been reduced to post
Hey John, that looks nice there! /\/\/\ Turkeyjerk's T... Don't let anyone deter ya with stories of bad handling and ride, this car rides great and handles like a go-kart. Just keep the mount close to the forged end.
I would like to see a tube shaped socket with a chamfered end that matches the perch bolt, welded in to the bone (near the forged end) have a plate that welds to the inside of the forged end and the bone, the plate should have a hole for the socket. Then bolt up the perch bolt- something similar to an adjustable perch. A cut down after market perch bolt with threads added.
Jim at Wintec Fabrication can help you with the shortened and threaded perch bolts. He is at wintecfabrication.com .
This is exactly what I'm doing. I still have to shorten the perch bolt and weld the plate on the inside of the bone.
Mat Thrasher, really like your set up but how much travel is there before you hit the spring on the frame?
I don't think I could make the spring hit the frame. There is actually quite a bit of room. The axle is closer to hitting than the spring. I put rubber bump stops on the frame in case the axle bottoms out.
theres alot of good pictures. One thing tho with the bones tapering toward the rear of the car would there be very much bind in the springs with mounts that aren't angled to stay parallel with the ends of the springs?
The problem with welding some kind of perch solid to the wishbone is that when your suspension settles over time the welded perch doesn't allow any adjustability. It causes the leaf spring to twist and bind.
