That's the 11.4 CR one. I had a 71 M code 4V 10.7 that I put dish pistons in that dropped it down to 9.4. Only bad expierience was having the dist gears strip off an aftermarket cam just after the warranty expired.:(

Same team did the 351C, the 351M/400, & the 429/460.

  4. I have a 400m in my Merc. Basically a 351 with it's balls cut off. I plan on replacing the 400 with a 351c when the 400 dies. Love the 351!!!

Australia's SBC!!! Also came in a destroked long rod 2bbl head version making it a 302C. used 6.030 rod length with 2V 'small' valves, intake ports and exhaust ports with closed combustion chambers - the so called 'Aussie heads' much desired by racers. In the US even the small port (2.06 intake valves) 2V are way bigger than the biggest performance SBC. The 4Vs had 2.19 intakes with either open or high compression closed chambers. Basically the same head as the 1970 Boss 302 - which was on a beefed up Windsor block. 1969 Boss 302 had even bigger 2.25 in intake valves. 351C blocks were all 2 bolt on the 2V engine and either 2 or 4 bolt on the 4V. All five mains are four bolt in the four bolt 351C whereas the Windsor block based Boss 302 only had four bolts on 2, 3 and 4. The only way to tell with the 351C whether it is a two or four bolt block is to drop the oil pan. 351C is instantly identifiable by the integral cast timing chain cover - this is a separate piece on the Windsor blocks - including the Boss 302 block.

A really good engine - can make great power and quite a few options. Even an ultra rare tripower (six made), Webers, tunnel rams, Hilborn, blower intakes and a bathtub type 2 piece crossram similar to the Cross Boss both by the factory and by Bud Moore. Plus Snow White in Fresno makes a shorty water pump conversion: www.snowwhiteltd.com

Here is the Snow White shorty pump shown on an ultra rare Australian heavy duty 351C 'pillow block'. This block has a one inch wide pan rail and mains webs. The bare block weighs 150lbs!

One of the great motors....be prepared to have timing issues if you have stock compression. Here's a link to how I solved mine.. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=280230
Try for a 4V engine-they make less torque out of the gate, but make up for it in the top end. Look for a "4" on the top corners of the heads where the valve covers are angled. And any Gurney-Westlake stuff is PORN, and MUST be shared with the whole class.

  10. Lots of strong clevelands running around Australia.Heaps of speed parts available here, check aussie e-bay ..

    Hey Bad Bob,

Don't give up hope on that 400 (no M, that's for the 351). Tim Meyer Inc sells stroker kits and various pistons for the 400. His pistons allow you to use the closed chamber Aussie 2V heads, US closed chamber 4V heads, and stock heads while obtaining decent compression ratios. Price Motorsports sells spacer kits so you can bolt on any 351C intake.

Jon Kaase has won the PHR-EMC 2 years in a row with a 403ci "Cleveland". If you look closely at the pix of the motor you can see the 1" tall casting ridge running beside the dizzy identifying the motor as the tall deck 400 block. I'm running a 400 with Price intake spacers, ported 351C Torker intake, heavily reworked Boss 351 heads, Oliver rods, Ross pistons, Eagle crank, Bullet cam, and Demon carb. I've never dyno'd it fully, we just broke it in on the dyno and even then we never went more than 2/3 throttle and 5000rpm.....it made 426hp during break in. Not sure what it will pull at 6500rpm and full throttle but it is a street motor built for the occational blast down the strip and lost of cruise nights.

A friend and I built one in 83 when the landlord said the house was condemned.
No more rent. We worked in a parts store and its a great motor. He had it in a 74 Ranchero and that car was legend in San Diego in the 80's..
Ranchero is long gone and the base-model 61 galaxie is waiting.

Sounds like a lot of folks are pleased with 351C motors. Thats great to hear, I have been runing one in the coupe for many years and have no problems to report. Its a mild build and gets a lot of highway use. Reliable, good power, if I wanted better mileage I could have gone to something else.

IMO the 351C is the top tier motor for stock power potential in a SB. The only issue is the oiling, and that can be overcome. If power is flow, then the 351C is top dog, but you have to build the motor to make the heads work.

  15. I have a Yates built 351C with 2V Aussie heads in a non HAMB friendly '93 Mustang with a world class 5 speed. I bought it all awhile back, have heard the motor run and its more than healthy. I've yet to fire it in the mustang though and I've never messed with a Cleveland before so this ought to be quite the experiance...

I'll get a picture of it stuffed in there when I get back out to the shop.

    Picture of the foxbody though...
