On my yammy chop I need a place for the elctrics to go. It's gonna be pretty bare bones, so under the seat is out. I like the look of a spun aluminum oil tank, kinda like a mini moon tank, but I'm a cheap******** (got about $80 in this whole bike). I found two measuring cups at wally world sor $2.50 each. Took off the handles, put a small peice of steel inside so I could bolt both halves together, and done, my $5 "moon" tank. I might run the ignition switch on the side. Now I need a small ammo box for my battery....

cool idea. i would just add another mount on the bottom to keep it from rocking and cracking the top mounts.

This is a cool idea, James- thanks for the tip.
I know it's been a while on this post but I'm just getting back to it now.

I was kicking around a setup to eliminate the battery on my XS650 project. There are some kits on Ebay now...

With this setup you could probably hide the whole deal in your 'fake oil tank' and not need the ammo box?
Anyone of you bike guys convert your metric chopper to run without battery? Any drawbacks to this setup other than losing the electric starter?

James, that is a way cool idea. I LOVE it! You can't beat cheap and cool. You know we're all gonna copy you now, right? LOL

As far as ammo cans go, I've seen some small ones at the Army surplus around town for about $6. I think the small ones are used to hold non-belted rounds these days.

nappy - those battery eliminator kits wont work on the xs. they need a permanent magnet type rotor to work, and the xs' alternator isnt so equipped.

    however

you can find a magneto from several 70s vintage yammy dirtbikes that'll fit the taper on the end of the crank. get the mess timed, add a voltage reg. (can be had at dirtbike shops) to run your lighting with some simple wiring and you can toss that*****ing battery right out the door.

you'll only have a kickstart then, and the only electrics you'll have will be the head and taillights. thats all a motorcycle needs anyways
