I was told that my stock gas tank under my 55 Plymouth is so corroded inside that it is going to cost me $200.00 bucks to have it cleaned out and coated inside. Has anyone ever used a different car's gas tank under their 55 Plymouth that fit good? If so, what kind was it, and how well did it fit? Thanks, to all who reply.
Pics will help... I think anything you do (replacement wise) will probably cost $200. Since the fill neck location is fairly important, you can't use just anything, and most aftermarket tanks are $200 at least. On the P15-D-24 forum, several people have had trouble with the coated tanks, the coating gets eaten up by modern gas. There are several threads about how to clean out an old gas tank - the favorite message I read about was to put a chain inside the tank and put the tank in a cement mixer for many hours. The racket is reported to be terrible but it peens and s****es the rust inside the tank. If the corrosion is on the top (common) it can be reinforced with JB-Weld. But that gets expensive too. A 33-gallon tank from a full sized Bronco is the right size but far too deep. If you don't mind pushing the trunk floor up, that could work.
For $200 I'd just save the h***le of trying to retrofit some thing and have it cleaned and coated. You gotta figure out your filler neck, mounting, making your sender work, etc...
These people clean out gas tanks all the time, and they should know what type stuff to seal the tank with without gas eating it out.
I think you'd be better off getting a good tank from a 55-56 Dodge or Plymouth from John Fowley at Big M Auto in Williams, CA. There's a filter inside the pickup inside the tank that would gum up if you swished in sealers.
