I believe the rear connection allows you to run the exhaust through a muffler and still have it exit at the rear wheels on the street back when you'd get pulled over in a heart beat for loud pipes. Faux lakes pipes! oh the horror.
Front "inlet" may not have been used. A head pipe with a muffler then connected to the rearmost inlet. This gives the look of a side pipe but is muffled.
They are called "Outsiders". And yeah, its to run with either a muffler or wide open and still have the same exit point.
