I did a search and it seems that everyone who has chaned to gl*** packs or what not has something larger than a 6. Anyone out there with a i6 with some packs on? any videos? im thinking about picking some up tomorrow but just want to make sure im not wasting my money. any wisdom would be awesome thanks

I had a buddy with a car that was a straight 6 in High School. He put a cherry bomb on it. He was pretty proud of the sound.

He pulled into a parking lot where a few of us where hanging out and revved it up coming in. He stops and gets out and says "sounds pretty good huh"?

Another buddy says "Sounds like a 6 cylinder with a cherry bomb on it". He was sort of deflated after that.

I tried one on a Ford 200 i6, sounded like I was "trying" too hard. Without headers or split exhaust I think you'll be disappointed.

I'm running a Y pipe just below the manifold with 2 inch pipes on a 223 Ford 6 cyl in my '54 F100. A pair of thrush? (cheapest ones from summit) placed about the middle of the pipes and it has a pretty deep rumble. There is no cackle or popping on deceleration. I think it sounds pretty good for a stock, gutless truck motor.

Split the exhaust and run straight pipes. Few things sound better.

    Shorty muffler-loud
    medium-mellow
    long-granny
The closer to the engine the more developed sounding for a rumble
straight pipe or porters for cackle
all this effort wasted....if you don't split the exhaust:)

This is just my opinion however, I love cackle for around town....but I sure wouldn't want it for long trips.

  12. Won't matter what you put on it, it will still soaund like Piper Cub taking off. That's just the nature of a 6 cylinder.

Some folks like 'em and some don't. I'd probably lean toward a Smithy or some other steel pack just because I personally prefer the sound of a steel pack to a gl*** pack but its a personal thiong and no one will really notice.

My 62 Falcon w/a 200 I6 had a y pipe into dual with dynomax turbos into bellflowers. Had a nice deep tone...everyone ***umed a 289 car and were always surprised to see a 6 still in it.

I used to have them on my '51 which had a 216 and then a 235 in it. The gl*** packs sounded good and melow. When you got on it a little it sounded a little spitty but I liked it. Oh and I was only running one, a split manifold would have been that much better. I like the sound of the 6'ers

Cherry bombs sound good on v-8s but 6 sounds better with straight pipes,I run cherry bombs on my 400sb 53,sounds radical, buddie with a 235 6 in his pickup put one on and it sounds like a logtruck,he said it sounded good to him until I talked him into letting me drive it and he changed his mind and switched to a single thrush muffler.About the only way in FLORIDA to get away running straight pipes is on a bike or them damn trailer QUEENS that are unloaded at the shows just to be looked at but never driven.

Wow thanks so much guys for the wisdom. I guess I should wait till I have the chance to hear all the different options. So just doing straight pipes will give it a nice sound?

Straight pipes are the only way to go on a six. The only way you're really going to get a great sound out of it is with a split manifold though, oh and small diameter pipe, nothing above 1 1/2. Here's a cheap trick I used to use, It'll give you a good idea of which direction you want to go with the sound, and won't be much out of pocket. Go to home depot, buy a stick of 1 1/2 galvanized. Hack off your stock tailpipe just before the muffler. Cut galvanized pipe to desireed length, run down to local parts store, pick up a few exhaust hangers, and clamps, and a pipe adapter that will join your two peices of pipe, and voila, you got a straight pipe for about 30.00. Sounds cheezy i know, but it's cheap, and you'll know if you even like the sound of the straight pipe, if not go out and buy a nice steel pack.

Barn ~ thanks I was thinking about just going straight pipes and then if I didnt like the sounds I could alway add some packs to it. so your saying to get a split manifold and not Y the exhaust? whats the difference of both going to do?

I put a "old school" split exhaust on my 235 1959 chevy with cherry bombs this winter and really like the sound. After reading and hearing people who thought the sound was good i gave it a try and like the results.

You want to split the manifold, just splitting the exhaust won't do much. Splitting the exhaust 2/4 gives it a different exhaust note, like a pissed off hornets nest. Do a search, there's a few good articles here about splitting your own manifold.

I put cherrybombs on my current build (still in the garage) but the straight-through gl***packs aren't "straight" (one end is coaxial with the tube but the other is slightly angled).

Next time if I want a "straight" gl***pack I will look at Thrush and Smittys.

My wife's '51 had a '60 235 in it with Fenton headers, duals and gl*** packs. I don't have a video, but it had a nice sound, but was much louder than the duals and gl***packs on my '59 with a v8

Got to go with SMITHEYS (SMITTYS) or PORTERS. Had Smitheys way back in the 50s and 60s (Flathead ford, Mopar I6) in that order. They are the original PACKS!! Have Smitheys ready to go on my 47 Dodge pickup. (see my split manifold on the albums) 2 inch in and out. Ya gotta love that sound with tailpipes all the way out the back. REAL OLD SCHOOL.:cool::cool::cool::cool:

Not to steal this thread, but I think this question may be helpful to a lot of us. I'm pretty far from looking at exhaust, but its never to early to plan, and I am wondering about this too. It seems we hear a lot of "it sounds good" or " it sounds cool". But what does it actually sound like? I've heard 6's sound anywhere from an almost annoying really high pitched "ratatat" all the way to a low grumble, almost 8 sound. Like that Stovebolt video posted earlier on this thread has a fairly deep, low tone. Thats what Id like to acheive. How about some advice on what effects tone? What pipe diameters, mufflers, muffler placements will acheive what outcomes? "Cool" and "good" are vague personal opinions, these do nothing to tell us what the actual sound is.
