51 Ford "car" motor would have the mounting points on a slant on the bottom of the waterpumps, 2 threaded holes on each side.....

is that what you have?

Hi saints. Most guys attach a bracket to the exhaust manifold bolt holes to mount the engine onto a stand. Simply a flat plate welded to a tube. The flat plate has the exhaust manifold bolt hole pattern, and the tube inserts into the stand in the normal fashion. Easy enough to make, or have made. I don't know if anyone sells them. Good luck with your flathead. - Rick

To mount a flathead on an engine stand you need adapter that bolts to your exhaust on one side.
I don't have pics, but the mount takes the place of one exhaust manifold.
The traditional ****** bolt/bellhousing support method is NOT strong enough on a flathead to support the weight of a finished flathead motor and it will most likely crack the bellhousing.

It looks like steel plate set against a cylinder at an angle and has mating holes for the exhaust ports.

Hope this helps.

ill try and get some pics when I get home.....I looked on the water pump ears and there smooth no holes but like I said its on the floor so Ill have to get it up to get a 100% look at it

7. This is my exhaust mounted engine stand deal. I saw photos on here and then bought the material and made it. Quite simple and very inexpensive, fits on a regular engine stand and works like a charm as the engine is easy to rotate. I drilled 4 holes so it can lock at 90 degree intervals.

Sounds like you may be looking for a floor type display or storage stand in which case I believe Vern Tardell sells them. They are more like a steel tube skid that attaches to the exhaust ports. Jason...

Why not just get a regular engine stand? its nice to be able to rotate the motor to work on, and easy to roll around.
late model flatheads can be mounted on a regular heavy duty stand the back of the motor is strong enough to hold it.

You CAN NOT mount a early model flathead this way, it will crash to the floor with a expensive thud. That is why the exhaust mount is used on early motors.

This is what I use

I have never not once used the exhaust mount stand.I only have 59AB's
The bellhousing will not break off. Tell the old wife to shut up.
Hell I have had one on cheapy HF stand, even thru a earthquake it didn't break off.

I must stop reading this ****..

He has the side mount version in stock.
Benefit of the side mount is that you can ***emble the clutch/flywheel while on the stand.

I mounted my 8BA on a conventional stand until I needed to install my trans. adapter and mock a trans case. Then I made this plate:

I've got a flat head engine stand. It's cast iron and pretty heavy - it has Aamco embossed on it. It bolts to the exhaust ports and has different possitions just by spinning the engine around.

I’m going with the one that screws to the exhaust ports<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />
I looked at my flat head and it has the slanted water pump ears with the 2 small holes
So can I get new water pumps with the ears that have the one large hole to accommodate the rubber disk bushings...or are I stuck with these?
I’m thinking the mounting of the engine would be easier with the horizontal mounting ear and not the slanted

If you don't want to use the slanted mount water pumps you'll probably have to replace the pumps with the 8RT style pumps on an 8BA or the early pumps (pre-48 p***enger car) for a 59AB or earlier type motor. Be aware though the pulleys may be for different belt widths.

I hope this pic got attached. If not pm me and I will send it to you. This is a pic I made to cradle the engine from the oil pan rails. It has handled an engine as big as my Mopar big block with auto ******. Very easy to build

Horse Hockey.....
Old wives tale...I have been hanging the early blocks on the bell housing for 50 years.
If you calculate the strength of the cast iron in the cross section you have AT LEAST a 3 to one safety factor.
The engine stand will fail first.

To answer your question about motor mounts, like someone else said theyre on the pumps. On the later cars like yours there are 2 bolts on like a 45* angle on the bottom of each pump. Id just use a regular engine stand to hold it unless you have a trans attached. I'll try and get some pics later when Im in the garage.

Here is a stand I made by drilling a plate that fits exhaust holes and weld it to an existing engine stand. Pay attention to the angle you weld at so the engine sits level on the stand. Most stands tilt back.

What you want for your engine are 48-52 Truck pumps - they are the same as your car pumps but have the horizontal mount.

Out of curiosity, have any of you broken a half-bell by hanging it on a regular engine stand?

I'm beginning to think it's like the myth of cracking a flathead bore by overheating. I can't find anybody who has had it happen to them and I'm reaching the conclusion the cracks were all casting defects that came apart long, long ago.

I had mine hanging by the halfbell for quite a while but you cant put your clutch on or take the oil pan off. I messed around with it for a while on there and it never broke. I didn't have the balls to let it hang from the bell without using some of the oil pan bolts.
