Custom radio flyer wagon pics and ideas???

here is a few pics of two wagons I have in the process for my son 'Diesel' and my niece 'Haley'. They have custom made frames with radius bar style front axles. the axles are 3/4 inch alum. I'm still working on the springs, so far I have found that the mainsprings from 8 day clocks seem to be strong enough while having alot of spring to them. I am planning on painting them like 60's dragsters with scallops and goldleaf lettering. Haley's will be called 'Haley's comet' of coarse, still thinking of a good name for Diesel's. Anybody got any good ideas for what would make a good scale alum. MOON tank?

 

Too bad that your wagons didn't turn out. Hell with an awsome name like Diesel, shold be able to call it something like 'Diesel('s) Only' or 'Diesel Long Hauler'. Keep up the good work, I think your wagon is going to ride better than my truck.

Heiniken makes mini kegs, 2 diffrent sizes. I'm planning to use one on my next wagon,they fit the part. I'll probably use an old leather belt to hold it down

I found this forum a few months back, when I was considering building a wagon for my son. I was inspired to say the least. Here are some pics of my work in progress.

The dash will be similar to the floor, varnished wood. It fits 2 4yr olds side by side, and there is room behind the grill for a 6 pack.

JettBack50 - what type of paint did you use for your w/w's? Have you had any brown leaching through?

Now thats just pure wagon porn. Very nicely done.

 

I spent about an hour taping off the two tires and cleaning them all down. I used dishwashing liquid and water first, dried, then wiped down with Wax and Grease remover a few times each. Then I sprayed on a coat to white paint, and it turned yellow. Second coat of white, dried and turned yellow. Started over and used Kilz primer which is what you see in the pics. I has been a while and now bleed through.

Another choice is Kylon Fusion paint. It is made to stick to plasic but A few guys said it worked well on the tires. The main problem with the tires is that they are new and still leaching mold chemicals. It is best to do this to seasoned tires, but since our tires are not going to get very hot being tugged around at 4 mph with 100 pounds over them. The next best thing to do is clean them up and bake them at about 250 for a couple of hours and clean again before painting. That should help.

 

Great little car, Is that a new repop ? What did you do to the frame ? my guess is it's custom. I would like to see additional pictures if possible.

Anyone know where to find a 6"-ish steering wheel? Preferably steel. I've been looking, but not much luck. Might make a laminated wood & steel one, but if I can find something nice off the shelf.....

 

Cool post, I have a dude wagon I bought a year ago that Im itchin to work on just need a new welder. I made the huge mistake of painting over the original patina though.

Where can one find the tires that you have shown?

I just bought this fiberglass 32 (??) Ford roadster body and thinking about turning it into a wagon.

 

51 what kind of wheels you want on the 32??? also they have fiber glass seats for that too

 

When I was at the Hershey PA Swap Meet I saw a Radio Flyer tandem axle and he extended the uhhh body.

My one year old's future ride. I have some baby moons that will fit great on the wheels once painted. I plan to have the steering funtional from the cockpit once she is old enough to do it. It has to be painted and the seat upholstered. I am creating an aluminum duece style grill for it. It has bushed steering, pivoting front axle, and a concealed coil sprung rear end (with a flathead V-8 piston differential). It is a 1938 Steelcraft Pontiac.

I am amazed that there are so many cool ideas.

A friend and I were just playing with some ideas for his wagon a few days ago.
He was thinking of larger wheels in the back for a hotrod rake.

I am going to cut a few stickers for the new "custom".
I came up with a few ideas based on the original design that I thought we might pick from for a more hotrod or racier look.

If anyone here wants a new set of stick-on lettering for their wagon, I can probably come up with something unusual to help out with.
I would do it as a favor as long as I get to see the final pics posted here for our enjoyment.
I would only charge a few bucks for costs if it is for fun and entertainment, and to see some more cool ideas come about.
Just cover my cost and I'll try to make something cool just to experiment with. (nothing too time-consuming)

Here are a few distortions I put in the computer if that gives someone ideas of a cool design I could use for a custom wagon.

The first one is the "factory stock" logo just as it appears on the wagon.

I like the third one with the flames for a wagon with big back tires and a rake.

The fifth one is raked forward for that old time "speeding" look.

I also like the last one for a mild rodded wagon.

Who wants to be the experiment?

The pics are in red just to show up here. It will most likely be cut in white lettering unless you have a different type of paint scheme.

I think numbers three and five are my favorites. The last one is pretty good....

Do I need to add more flames?

More large-to-small taper?

the first radio flyer i built a few years back, on the bottom back i used 1'' casters, on the front i used 1'' swivel casters. i used the org. handle. painted it purple for the daughter, i pulled her in it at a few different car shows and people loved. it. i've took it all apart and now i have another that has the large tires on it with the wood sides. all these on here are great.

 

I just made a giant 2ft by 6 ft wall sticker for a friend who wanted to decorate his kid's room.
The real wall sticker is in red and white.

Hey Ya'll,

I'm proud to say I'm starting my swap meet sled project! I picked up this beauty yesterday at a flea market, for only $25! Around these parts, thats a heck of a bargain. Somebody had painted over the logo's on the side, but with a little light sanding, I was able to expose the letters. She's soon to be slammed, and ready to pile parts on! I just cant decide if I'll leave the paint as is, or if I'll strip it and repaint it a custom color.

Does anybody know about what year and or model she may be? The bottom of the tub measures 15" x 34" roughly.

Not sure on the exact year, but I'd say that's 60s/70s vintage judging by the swivel mechanism. I found a newspaper ad on Google that has a Radio Jet with the same/similar swivel mechanism.

I wouldn't paint it. I'd leave it as is and maybe add some striping.
