Hey guys, I'm building a modified T running a 21 stud and 40 closed drive rear end. I was wondering are there any tricks to lining up the rear end to the ******? For example: I don't want to weld my rear cross member in, get the motor and ****** mounted in and find out the driveshaft is an inch higher than it needs to be. Maybe I am overthinking it but it keeps me up at night. Thanks, Matt
Hello, If you are running the torque tube from a '40, it will need to be shortened to length right? So, wouldn't you just locate the rear crossmember where it needs to be and make the tube fit. As for the height of the drive shaft, you should be able to run a line from the back to the ****** to the front of the banjo. Do the math and you should be able to find the dimensions of your torque tube and know what clearances it will need. Hope this helps, Mitch
This is what I'm talking about. Just wondering if there is any trick to figuring this out before I do it the hard way. Basically figuring out the angle of the driveshaft before the motor is in. Or is it make angle close and set motor in accordingly?
If you drew the illustrations in your last post, you can draw a fairly detailed drawing that will answer your own question. Draw a simple side view with tires of the size you plan to run. The engine should sit very close to level at the carb base. A couple of degrees one way or the other is ok. Bolt your trans to the engine and your angle is set. Slide the rear end up to the trans and check the pinion angle. Do a search here to find drawings of pinion angle to trans. Your other option is to do a full size drawing on the garage floor. I have Tee that is set up the same way as your drawing. It works OK , but after a while gear oil drains out from the rear end because of the down ward angle of the drive shaft. New seals help slow the leaking, but it still leaks. Something to think about...If I ever redo the car I think I will raise the motor.....
