Leave it to someone like chadillac to have a silly comment.

But all in all it ****s to see a ship and a piece of history go to waste. They should have at least crashed it into the ocean floor and made a coral reef out of it and that isn't a joke. They really do that with boats but could you imagine a 990 ft coral reef starters package off the coast of america? Could have been pretty cool...

For the day crowd, or just in case you didn't see post #34, the ship has been purchased in the 11th hour by the SSUS Conservancy. The details are on the video in the link posted above and here: http://vimeo.com/13109994

If we refurbished the SS UNITED STATES could we send the barbarian
    back?

Hmmmph. A flaming Norseman's voyage would be better suited...from right here in California! Bon Voyage, Arnie!

America's ashamed of them and the aggression shown. Now we take deep bows to our 'superiors'.

im glad they are saving the ss united states its a better fate than her sister ship the ss america you can see the video on youtube of her run aground on an island heading for the s****pers the waves pounded her to bits and she sank, the trouble with getting rid of the mothball fleet is the ships have a large amount of asbestos used on them and its very hard to get rid of , the ss united states was sent to turkey and had all its asbestos removed years ago this should help in its restoration ,

I see this thing all the time, you can see it as you cross the Walt Whitman Bridge from Jersey into Philly.

The interior of the ship was gutted in the mid 1980's. As far as I know there's still a resturant in NC called the Windmill Point Resturant that the entire interior of the resturant was decorated with the chairs, tables, stairs, and other memorabilia that was purchased from the auction in the '80's when they gutted it.

It's a shame about the ship, but in todays economy it would take someone with more money than brains to make it sea worthy again. I hope it can remain dormant until the time comes that it's financially feasable to get it going again.

Thought I'd bump this old thread since the old girl is at risk of being s****ped again. Also, it's had a good run and if the Mods deem this too off topic, I won't be too but hurt if this thread were to get closed.

At this moment 61 years ago, the SSUS was at the beginning of her record setting maiden voyage and is still the worlds fastest ocean liner to this day.

    Happy 4th!

THAT.....is still a beautiful ship. I see it everytime I drive over the Walt Whitman Bridge going into Philly and I have stopped at the dock to jump out of my car a stare at her. I am sure you know it is in very bad condition these days and there is a foundation to try and rehab it but she is very bad. Beautiful sight from the top of the bridge though and I will be seeing her again in about 3 weeks.

I just pulled up the map for the bridge, got the satallite image, and saw the ship. Strange days we live in now.

C'mom, Mike. That's not quite fair and the truth has nothing to do with shame. I doubt you'll find many Americans ashamed of our defense in WW2, but in any case, the HAMB is supposed to be apolitical.

The truth is that these ships, saved not for history but in case of future need, are now terribly outmoded and unsuitable for combat in the 21st century-too old, too slow, to hard to retrofit with modern electronics and to susceptible to modern weapons. They are very expensive to maintain and a drain on the military budget, diverting monies that could be better used elsewhere.

My dad flew Hellcats in WW2 and I am fiercely proud of his service-and all his fellow soldiers. But these ships, like their long gone sisters are dinosaurs.

    Happy 4th of July, America!

Again reluctant to bump this off topic thread but in case anyone's interested big news just announced minutes ago. Had very recently again about gone to the s****pers, 3 bids accepted and last minute recieved a $600,000.00 lifeline from donors around the globe.

    Then this. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/04/b...rans-atlantic-heyday-may-sail-again.html?_r=0

Press conference, commentary starts about 2 minutes in.
