Just got a 29 Coupe usual 350/350/8 inch, Full fendered ,not chopped. My problem is thought I had a noisey lifter ,so did a complete motor running adjust, actually Ive done it twice. Still have one click noise sounds to me just like a loose one but am sure thats not it . Its pass side ,cant locate it yet, done the screw driver trick, piece of hose, even a mech.s stethscope. You can hear it till a probably 12 hundred rpm then gone . Carries 30 lbs oil at warm idle. Starts easy runs about 180 temp, and hauls the mail if ya get after it. Its drivin me nuts ,any ideas . Thanks

59 Bucks says the flexplate is busted around yhe crank bolts. Get out the flashlight, and pull the inspection cover.

When you are adjusting the lifters with the motor running, does the noise go away for a bit and then return? If so, you may have a bad lifter, push rod, or rocker arm and ball. If the noise does not go away, maybe a slight exhaust leak would be something to look for. If you are running cast manifolds, look for a crack on the back side of it. Dennis

X2, Be sure to check these and positively eliminate them before going on to any other diagnosis.

A flat cam can make a clicking sound like a loose lifter. Check lift on each valve. I've also seen exhaust guides so bad the exhaust leaking past the guide makes a tick. You would have caught that when you adjusted the valves. I'd check the fuel pump and the cam.

I dont know if you have fuel injection, but sometimes injectors are noisy at low RPM's... Sounds just like a valve tick

binding fuel pump rod is another possibility-also lay a level across the tops of the rocker arm studs--if not screw in, one may be pulling out

A sloppy timing chain will make a ticking sound slapping off the timing chain cover.

  13. Check your fuel pump rushrod. thay have been known to wear out causing a "lifter tick" that wont go away. This was a common failure at one time.

One thing not mentioned is a worn out valve guide, I've seen that let the valve slap back in the seat - sounds just like a loose lifter. My bet is the #6 intake. Ask me how I know!

It may be the Swiss clock in the dizzy to keep good time.
Maybe it is time to pull it and refresh it, cause a lot of things go tick, tick, boom.

...and eventually wear a hole thru the cover! You'll then pull the balancer, replace a good seal, bolt it all back together and marvel at how the new seal didn't fix the leak!

    Don't ask how I know....LOL

Sometimes a rubber hose helps to locate the problem... Use it like a stethiscope (spelling?)

Sometimes a PCV will make a clicking sound at idle. If you are running one pull it out with the engine running and put your thumb over the hole in the end.

I had an exhaust leak for about a weak thinking the whole time it was lifter. I found the leak after taking the valve covers off 3 times. My header bolts needed torqued down. Their fine now.

pull the plug wires one at a time and see if it changes---i had a 327 340/360 with one bad hole---piston slap. when it got good and hot, it quit. i pulled the piston three times that i can remember and knurled it. hope its a "header" tick and not a bad hole.
