You CAN NOT mount a early model flathead this way, it will crash to the floor with a expensive thud. That is why the exhaust mount is used on early motors.

Ok that is what I said in my original post, and to be honest I searched the web for horror story's about early motors breaking off engine stands and could find nothing to back it up.
but...that is what I was taught long ago. Old wives tale? looks like it might be what with all the blocks you guys have bolted up and no problems at all.
Most "old wives tales" have a bit of truth in them.
Are all bellhousing's created equal? casting flaws, stress cracks ? me I dont know but
I think that I will stick with what makes me comfortable and any early block in my garage will be exhaust mounted.
Dam now I have to rethink the whole "Running with scissors" and "Playing with a loaded gun" Old wives tales.
sorry for spreading Old wives Tales

here's what I used. $20 on craigslist. It did kinda feel like it might tip over a few times, but just be careful.

but this one works even better and it costs only $free.99
plus its real low to the ground so you dont have to worry about it tipping over.

okay...have some really nice adjustable stands that move under against the pan rails and rest there - a good welder can make them up - and they have fit all the engines from Hemi's to Chevies to my flathead - should be first pic...furniture dollies work good - and are cheap...I pick up heavy duty dollies when I can and have run this little Merc on this grocery cart using the front 1953 truck mount and the 8BA bellhousing secured at the back...like most guys - I have about 25 motors put back on mostly OSHA compliant dollies and always looking for the next motor dolly...also wagons are great for trannies...
