so after reading this thread, another hamb thread, and the extensive p15d24 brake overhaul article it's pretty apparent I need the heavy duty puller. Does anyone know a shop in the stl area or anyone in the area who has one I could borrow? I'll pay shipping but if I'm going to get the plymouth on the road it's pretty much a necessity....

I use an $18 power steering pulley puller from Pepboys to pull my rear hubs. Bought it in a pinch a few years ago. Hasn't broken yet after about 50 pulls.

I just used a rubber mallet on mine. Seemed to work fine.

I bought a $5 "knocker" from Paul Ellis Ford Parts.

A fist full of solid steel, drilled & tapped on one end. Thread it on & pop it with a hammer. Done deal.

  10. Hey Guys...If the rear is still in the car? you don't need no stinkin pullers! Ya gotta try this. Its using the weight of the car to pop the drums loose. In a way its similar to loosening the castle nut and driving a short distance....i.e. using the weight of the car. Try it, you'll like it.

    Murph:cool:

Ok fellas, so i tried the weight of the car trick, and it was a no go. Couldnt find the puller anywhere, so i made one! I took an old ford wheel (5x 4.5) and welded a 3 inch long chunk of pipe onto the center of it. I then tooks some s**** plate, drilled a hole in the center of it, welded a nut to the inside, and bingo! Instant puller!

    Hope this helps someone!

    Thanks alot!

Thank You all so much for this thread and the great information I've been battling with this for the last 2 weeks on a 58 Belvedere, and I have been using a good puller.

the problem here is your working on a nash, most hot rodders dont have a clue how to hot rod or just fix one. easiest thing to do is go to the rental store and rent a brake drum puller. or if you get tired of that i made on out of an old harmonic balancer puller and three short hunks of chain, simple and effective. dont use a puller that hooks the outside of a drum, tried that once and i still have the axle with the center of the drum still on it in the garage. If you need help with the nash give me a shout im close by!

Actually this is on my 47 plymouth special deluxe.

My 41' Nash has a GM 8.5 under it. I figured out how to hotrod it pretty well:D

You've been VERY lucky! Frankly, I don't understand how you're doing it with a power steering pulley puller, could you elaborate or post pics of this puller?

I think you're just removing brake drums, not the hubs from a tapered rear axle. If you're getting the hubs loose with a rubber mallet, somebody didn't tighten them.

To quote Al from Tool Time, "I don't think so, Tim!"

SWEAR ,buddy ,SWEAR then SWEAR some more when you are done CURSE a little louder. Its already been well covered. Just seek out the old flathead v8 hub puller. Do not under any cir***stances pull on the studs or you will warp the drum. 3 legged pullers are out also. When it pops just stand back and admire your handy work.
