I just bought a 1950 chevy deluxe and I drove it home about 45 miles, no problems. Today I was driving it and it just died. I thought it might have been out of gas but with stater fluid it was a no go. I checked the points and the had fire as well as the spark plugs. Maybe I just flooded it but can anybody give their opinion. It's a 216 inline 6. thanks
FUEL?? I have seen them pull crap up from the tank (they had no pick up screen) PULL THE LINE LOOSE AT THE CARB AND HIT ER WITH SOME AIR. Sorry I got cap happy I'm not yellin.
Sounds like THE DUDE has headed you in the right direction. I put a glass filter in mine, and finally had to vat the tank. Get us some pics Gus
Air, Fuel and Spark. Mixed with some compression=BANG! If you have spark, I would guess that you have air, now to check fuel...If you have fuel delivery, then compression is your next stop. It's a good thing to test anyway, so that you can have a baseline.
like DUDE said id pull the line at the carb and take a air gun and blow the line back in to the tank and then try it, if your geting spark to the plugs, it still could be that your not geting enough spark to fire the fuel
Mine did the same thing..turned out to be the fiber timing gear. Just as it stopped the windshield wipers did a flip flop and they were in the off position !!!
I just checked the fuel and took off the hose into the carb and turned the engine over and it is definetely pumping fuel. what now
Check fuel line from tank to see if you getting fuel then go to the filter and pump. Good luck and lets see some pictures.
We need some more info. Has the car been driven every day before you got it? Or has it been sitting? Have you done anything to it or changed anything since you got it? Since you're getting gas at the carb, my first wild guess would be something in the carb. You can rebuild a Rochester in an hour or two. That would go a long way to give you some peace of mind and eliminate some questions for very little money and effort.
is the battery getting charged ,might not be charging and went dead.if they ran it with12v ,if it was a 6 might have burned up the coil. thats what i did.pop a condenser in it.
You mentioned that it had spark, but what color was the spark?? Was it bluesish, or kinda redish, when cranking it over at the sparkplug???
After you are positive you are getting fuel and fire, check to se that your valves are working. The cam gear could've come apart. 216s were known for that. It's not all that common, but it deos happen. Check out the basics first.
If the fuel pump works, the cam is turning, probably not the timing gears. Flooding is a possibility. Hold the pedal to the floor and crank it, boost it if necessary. You can look down the carb and see if there's gas pooled in the intake, if so, it's flooded. The wiper story made me chuckle, my Ford did the same thing! The timing gets off, making pressure in the intake. The "parking" passage in the switch lets the pressure in to the wiper motor and it runs like a steam engine.
I'll second this. Every time I beat myself to death trying to figure out why a points equiped engine that should start won't it's been a bad condenser, every time!
Yes, the condenser is cheap and easy to replace but will kill the car completely if it goes out. Good place to start.
Could be a stuck float in the carb. If it has fuel from the pump and a spark, it will start...sounds like the fuel is not reaching the engine through the carb. Fix that and you fix the problem.
This may sound stupid, but are you sure the key is in th on position when you press the starter button? I had the key in the wrong position on my 50 deluxe a couple of times and it did exactly what you're describing. If it's still running 6v, make sure the battery is charged up. My deluxe also had choke AND throttle knobs on the dash. Make sure you're pulling the choke
